What kind of build order does everyone here use? I have been able to play a couple weeks worth of SMAC, but always have reservations as to the most effective build order. For some reason I tend to switch my beginning production over to a scout, then a scout, colony pod, former. I know that pushes the colony pod a good bit back, but I tend to like running around and finding out exactly where I am to begin with. So what kind of build orders do you "experienced" guys use? Does it change with faction? Map size? Difficulty level? Multiplayer (evil grin)? Just curious. Sand

It depends upon what phase of the game you are in. In the very begining, I like to build a former first (usualy rush built from the starting minerals) and then a scout patrol (people who like to play it safe can reverse that order). Then I make either a probe team (for exploration) or a colony pod, depending upon how much exploring I have to do and whether or not I am expanding my bases. Later in the game, when my established bases have already pumped out a lot of formers, I will skip making formers and go straight to scout patrol and then supply crawlers. Still later in the game, when I have a base near a monolith with a command and bioenhancement center producing elite units for me and mag tubes set up to move them where I need them, I will skip the scout patrol and go straight to supply crawlers. Even later, when I have a large fleet of supply crawlers in reserve, I will go straight to building base facilities in the order recyling tanks, children's creche, rec commons, etc. Adapation to the circumstances of the moment is important. |
