My question is this:
I'm in the middle of play and I decide that my plain vanilla chaos infantry (8-4-2)need to be equipped with the empath song special ability. Is there any way I can upgrade these already-built units with this ability (or any other ability, for that matter) , or do I just have to create new units? (I know you get the option when you first discover an advance, but I'd like to know whether its possible at other times).

You have to create the upgraded unit first, then use Ctrl U on each unit you want to upgrade, or highlight the original unit in the design menu and click the obsolete?(or is it upgrade?) button and you have the option of upgrading all of your units at once, for a price.

It's the upgrade button that let's you do that. It costs exactly as much to upgrade them either all at the same time, or one by one, but there's a little advantage upgrading them all at time. All your units can still move when upgrading a single unit ends it's turn. Just don't try upgrading all needlejets to a one with better reactor. You might experience some unpleasant (needlejet) crashes. If you have to, keep them all in bases.
