I'm playing with the spartans, but don't know which technologies will be the most beneficial to me.... also, new techs become available to me occasionally, but I don't know how and/or why. How do I get to techs I want and so forth.

Turn of the Blind Research open when you start a game. Then use the tech tree map that came with the game to find the shortest way to the desired tech
