My problem is this: Sister Miriam has a huge military, and would almost likely annhialate me if I gave her the cause. She keeps sending probe teams (like 4 per turn) stealing my research. Is there any way to stop her without declaring vendetta??

Get her mad at another faction. You probably won't be albel to use probe teams to do this though. Since she will undoubtable have a very high probe rating by now due to SE choices. The only thing you can do other than declaring vendetta, is to get other factions mad at her, through bribes or probe team actions against them by you posing as her. Thats about it. Station some probe teams in your bases though, that way you can expel the probe team if not kill it.

Nope. I do, too.

Declare war on her while you can. If she pulls even with you in tech, it's over.

Station probe teams in all bases, or at least the one she can readily get to. That will keep hers out for a time.
Build Hunter/Killer SP if it is available.
Build up your forces.
You will need to be ahead in tech.
If you can't get her to stop, you want to be ready to attack.
See if you can get someone else to do the dirty work for you. If you have a faction that likes you but not her, then ask for them to help you attack Miriam. If they do, reward them with some tech from time to time. Keeping them on the cutting edge and making them spend the money on the units. Don't give away tech to someone who is just waiting to turn on you though.

I play UOP and Miriam always hates me. She is sometimes nice the first time we talk, but will quickly turn sour after that.

I thought that you could kill enemy probe teams with impunity because they don't really "exist" militarily.

The real option is just to go in and kick Miriams butt...

If you let her come to you, you'll have to aggressively defend your bases, destroying any unit that moves within striking distance -before- it has a chance to attack. Even if she's behind in tech, she can compensate with her %25 attack bonus. Build copters if you have them.

I LOATHE the B*TCH!!!!!!

As soon as I find her, I amek friends with everyone else, and totally pund her into the GROUND until all that's left is a smouldering of burnt believer cities!!!!!!

Generally, I can't stand her. Never knows when she is out-matched, out-gunned, or out-classed. And her aggesiveness is matched only by Yangs making them the two most detested leaders.

Personally, Lal ticks me off as much as Miriam. All that Humanitarian whining, and he is one of the first to try and Planet Buster you. Hah!

I detest Miriam's faction as well. Every single game seems to culminate in a death struggle with her.

Currently I'm playing as the Peacekeepers in my first Transcend-level game, and as Fortune would have it, ended up nose-to-nose with the Believers across two land bridges. I knew right away what this meant, but in spite of my military preparations and high kill ratios, her ability to produce an absolute flood of units was turning the tide
against me.

What's saved me to date has been massed artillery. I beat each wave of approaching infantry and rovers to wrecks with artillery rovers (the land bridges are close enough that they can slosh back and forth between fronts along roads, as necessary), then destroy the stacks with sniping assault rovers, assisted by collateral damage. Throwing in some cheap plasma garrisons as designated defenders has cut the cost of my own losses as well.

She's been churning out her own artillery as well, to the point where her gatling batteries now outnumber her infantry and rovers three to one, likely because she is constantly building all types, but is mostly losing the ground-assault units. Fortunately for me, she seems unwilling to move her artillery forward enough to engage in a huge series of duels, possibly due to the distraction of a forward garrison unit entrenched in fungus. Lately it's been getting hit with twenty rounds of bombardment each turn, after which I pull it back and replace it with a fresh one.

I'm hoping to sink the land bridges through terraforming, after I've built bombers to drive her back a bit. If we were connected on a broader front, I don't know how I'd have survived. Treacherous bitch.

Cout - Sounds like fun. In my SMAC experiences, Miriam is rarely a challenge. She is merely an irritant that doesn't know enough to get out of my way. Overall, in only 1 out of 20+ games is Miriam a threat or a rival. Mostly, she is just waiting on being put in her punishment sphere and just irritating enough to remind you she needs it.
So in my experience, playing without her would ADD to my fun. If she did for me what she was doing to you, that would add to it. Strange, isn't it?

My favourite faction is UoP so Miriam is a pain. She's very aggressive to even if I play other factions. This is a problem because I like building more than killing.

Miriam is dangerous in the early to mid-game, if she is located near you (same with Sparta, if you are on land). Having her close can force to divert production from building infrastucture to building defensive units. If you stay in the tech race and build lots of choppers as soon as they are available, you can handle her easily as the game progresses. Early on, if you don't have the necessary defensive units (which can be tough to do as quickly as you would like), it's best to give in to her demands in order to stave her off. Do this very long, however, and her demands increase. Do it to long and she has every tech you have, and she's bigger and meaner. You're toast. So with her around, build up your defenses ASAP and then go on the attack. Once you take a few of her cities you've got her. She's usually the first one that I'm able to force into capitulation.

just kill her off as early as possibe. it doesn't matter what type of victory you are after. wipe them out. then go after yang...

Miriam is a pain when you run into her early. Luckily, in most of my games she antagonizes all the other factions also, so gets eradicated or is too busy fighting elsewhere to pose a major threat. Getting her to submit as a stooge can be a double-edged sword, 'cause she immediately starts expanding. Is there a point at which subservient pact bros (or sisters) start getting uppity enough to break the pact, or are they unable?

Miriam is cool. I was _realy_ away on technology (as it was meant to be) so I used probes and fundamentalism, got an avg. level of technology and continued to crush everybody with Planet Busters (everybody was at war with me becasue of the probes). Of course Planet was very angry, so I had to keep 5 Trance on each base and ~20 defense pods (that the computer seem to use pretty rarely).

That was pretty fun... Oh, the Planetry Datalinks such.

Earwicker-

She -will- break pact with you if she gets strong enough. I think it can happen anytime a submissive pact member gains a higher might rating than the dominant pact member.

The first time that ever happened it was Miriam that did it, and boy was I surprised! I had been giving her tech and units left and right and suddenly, pow!, right to the moon(s). She eventually declared herself supreme leader. One of the many reasons I dislike (hate, hate, hate) her.

I usually kill Miriam first while I still have a tech advantage. Then I suck her dry of resources as a pact brother, I finish her off. In the late game, she can get too powerful.

I just love seeing you guys whine about Miriam. Didn't it used to be that she was worthless and weak? +2 support is a wonderful thing.

Corazon is a wimp.

Ouch. Thanks for the warning. In that one game where she didn't fight to the last (wo)man, I kept her small by trading puny empty captured Hive bases for those in her primary territory (I already held New Bloomusalem). It just bugged me that she had Sooooo Many sea bases popping up.

Darkstar: in my games, Miriam ALWAYS is the most irritant faction, because I play her
Seriously, folks, if you the Believers manage to be on the same tech level you're on, then, depending on your SMAC prowess, you face a real challenge or you might as well just give up. So I'd second trippin' here - to fend off the Believers, pit 'em a) against the most powerful other faction or b) any number of factions that you yourself are at war with. Always keep conflict with 'em short, unless you want to go on an all-out offensive against them: if you're seriously out to fight Miriam, only shoot to kill. Oh, and yeah, the old 'take-over-sea-base-give-back-to-Miss-G.-make-peace' works only if you've never, ever commited any atrocity against the Believers - if you've done so, it's pretty much 'endless war'. So be nice to 'em, or stomp 'em (if you can...).

If you can, get Yang going after Miriam (or the other way around). They prove to be a nice even match most of the time and you can just stand back and watch the fireworks.

Ear,
Once you get Miriam to capitulate, she'll be so weak that even though she's building sea bases, she won't really be able to use them for a while...besides, once she get's a few good ones going, just call her up and make her turn them over to you. mmmmmm, free bases...

Boy I hate her guts. Take her out when you can. Most other factions will help you. I had her down from about 20 bases to only two and she wouldn't concede. She kept demanding all kinds of stuff from me. The nerve of her!
