I have a game with a large number of underdeveloped cities and a few core cities. For the first time I have used the city governors on the smaller cities to gain me some time and for the most part do the job well enough but not too well :-)My problem is that they build factories when their city does not have recyc' tanks. Is this an AI bug, or does it know something that I don't. I thought that it was always best to work up from least expensive facility for one function up to the next, but are there times when it is best to skip a generation or two?

Depending on the mineral output, a factory would benefit a city more than recycling tanks in the long run. Build the production increasers first, if there is not rush for a rec commons or the like, and stuff is build faster. I don't like the AI controlling my cities, units, or terraformers. |

I agree wholeheartedly with Victor. The Governors don't touch my bases. If I feel like assigning a governor, I still look over its shoulder. I treat it more as a suggestion machine than an automated base. The only time I let the AI control my formers is when I want one to do something like dedicate itself to removing Fungus, or building a road somewhere. |

I never use governors. I once tried automating my formers but i wasn't too happy about the results. But that was because the game was new to me so i knew nothing about terraforming (it should be chironforming!)Btw, what do automated formers do when they run out of job? All fungus removed from continent? |

Sometimes Automated formers move back and forth from one point to another a few times and stop with a task "a". This can be annoying, but I can live with it.I think that automating stuff can be a godsend, especially in the mid to late stages of a large map game. Automated inteceptor needlejets scout for you and knock out enemy air units/locusts. Automated Formers set to remove fungus work a treat with mag tubes. You can damage the environment with automated attack units taking out the worms and anutomated formers mopping up the fungus. City governors will never give you complete control. A lot of the time i find myself with a few cities that I don't really want to mess around with, and city governors take good enough care of them. Automation can speed up the game, and used skillfully can be almost as good as doing it yourself. |
