I am going to try some experiments with police units. Any suggestions? I haven't used any of my 'at home' units as police yet. Does it really make a difference in dealing with the drone problem?

OH YEAH! On the higher difficulty levels, they can be a livesaver at times... especially with conquered bases.

Police units, humble though they may be in comparison with gravships, psi choppers and all the other funky attack units, are my joint favourite unit in terms of their sheer usefulness compared with their cheapness. A couple of Trance Police Silksteel (or better) Sentinels in each base can hold off a quite amazing number of mindworm (and Spartan!) attacks, especially when their morale level gets up towards Commando, while simultaneously keeping those pesky drones nice and quiet so you don't have to waste resources building Rec Commons/Holo Theatres all over the place.

My other favourite unit, again a really humble and boring one, is the early-game Rover Former... it's really surprising how much more work it can get done with its extra move, and despite its high cost, it's well worth it if you operate a builder strategy. It's just great to get a couple of these running around building sensors everywhere, once they've done a bit of farm/mine/road work. Probably less useful to the more combat-minded, though!
