Well how about you read the reviews, download the demos (CTP isn't out yet) and decide for yourself.

Oh yeah, how do make a cheap rip-off of your own game? "Quake is a cheap rip-off of Doom!"

call to power has been out a while now mortis... and yes it is a cheap rip off of civ 2. but i wouldnt say that to alpha centauri alphaman... its one of the best games ive played so far and youve got a lot of guts saying that in this forum where players basically lose sleep over it.

i also lose a lot of sleep playing this but you do have to admit that it is basically CIV2 in space, just the same as Starcraft is Warcraft in space. sure there are a lot of difference (units, map , techs etc) but the basic game engine is the same.

prove me wrong...

Why? Civ II follows a tried and tested formula that works. SMAC has some refinements, but no major changes and I for one applaud that. CTP introduced a *lot* of changes to the formula, and from the reviews and opinions I've read, they've tinkered too far.
Your postings seem to indicate that you believe that the minor updates weren't worth doing. Wasn't Starcraft better than Warcraft? The same applies to SMAC. It's very similar to the Civ games, but with good reason.
IMHO, nip out and buy a copy, you won't regret it so long as you approach the game with an open mind. Right now you seem to be saying 'make me not dislike this game'.

im not saying it is a bad game (any of them S-craft, CTP, SMAC, CIV2 ) are all great games however considering the amount of money you gotta fork out for them i would like to see more originality than just nice pictures. sure one of two games wont set you back much but if you buy heavy dosages of computer games (as im sure most of you do) then you will know that the $$$'s add up.
i like sid meier as much as the next guy but civ , civnet , civ2 , SMAC , come on. how much longer?? ((not to mention Pirates, pirates Gold < RR tycoon , RR tycoon 2> )) this guy had a few good ideas and is just cashing in on them as much as he can

Alphaman

PS i own copies of all the above mentioned games so i speak from experience.

I generally trust Gamespot as one of the better internet gaming sites. They gave SMAC a 9.1 and CTP a 6.7.

I suppose you could consider all computer games updated versions of other games... CIV to M.U.L.E., for example. I just don't find that useful.

On an unrelated but pertinent note, Alphaman, you seem to enjoy pissing people off. That's just an observation from your posts in general. Feel free to comment as you see fit.

Why yes, one of my hobbies is general nuisance and havoc creator. I like to push peaople to the edge, see how far they will go, and then give then another little shove. Plus I find most of the chatter on these pages a little lacking in the emotive department. so i try to liven things up a bit. hope you dont mind.

PS im generally nice to people who are nice to me. ie I dont USUALLY start (verbal) fights.

I don't have a strong feeling about it either way. As a philosophical commitment, trying to help other people find their limits and in recognizing them defeat them is a valid goal; sort of a Coyote / Raven / Monkey enlightenment through chaos. On the other hand, if you are simply dedicated to the slaughter of sacred cows for its own purpose, then I question whether you are adding anything useful.
