I have seen a lot of people make references to releasing mindworms to the wild near enemy bases. Besides getting rid of the mineral upkeep of the units, what is the benefit of releasing them? Why would you not just keep on controlling them and attack the enemy yourself?

The big benefit to released mindworms is that you are not responsible for what they do after they are released out into the wild.

So if you don't want to declare war against a particular faction for some reason, it's a way of waging covert war against them. A few demon boils loose in your future enemy's backyard is entertaining to watch.

That works in single player against the AI, but in MP I don't think it would because the other player would know what you did and would declare vendetta on you anyway.
