Here I am thinking I'm learning SMAC and then I read your posts. The mind boggles at the complexities possible in this game. I'm hearing of things I have no idea about. Units I've never heard of. Tactics which border on the perverse :-)

SMAC is a game that is good for all levels. Chances are the ideas you read in this forum, you would of probably found out sooner or later. SMAC allows a beginner to play an easy and straight forward game and allows a genius to complex the game. This is a REAL strategy game not those Real Time stuff.

Yeah, there's really no need to be scared. The on-screen help is pretty good, and if this is your first time playing a game like this, just start on the lowest level and work your way up.

If you need help, you can go to "http://www.gameguides.com/guides/alphacen/", it's pretty lengthy, but it tells you basicaly everything.
You can checkout the tutorial scenarios... They are in the Scenario folder, under "Explore", "Discover", "Build" and "Conquer".
The in-game help outlines all the mechanics and how to get around the interface...
And then of course there's the Manual.
