Do you guys/gals have any good custom units. I used to think custom units were one of those features that nobody really use. I however discovered that customising your own units can be extremely helpful. For instance, one of my best ideas for custom units is have needlejet transport. So instead of ship transport you can have aircraft transport. Just remember to refuel or else your troops die as well.

I use Psi Choppers to clear out enemy invasion forces, especially if they're heavily armored. Get the Dream Twister and these are deadly.

As soon as I get the tech for speeder chassis, I design a rover former (0-1-2). They can move and start terraforming on the same turn -- a bit of an investment in time and cost that pays off very quick. In addition, they can be upgraded to fusion formers and superformers as they become available, unlike the plain vanilla 0-1-1 formers.

My favorite custom unit is a probe clean cruiser. They are deadly to coastal and water base. You just have to have a water base near, and every turn you may steal money, technology, or infiltrate an ennemy city, because they have many moves. Later on you may add deep-pressure hull, to go to base that are further.

When you discover Graviton Theory, you can replace the Needlejet transporters with Gravship transporters that doesn't need to be refueled.

minor correction:

you *can* upgrade the 0-1-1 original design formers...

you may need to reconstruct the formerly obsolete design of the 0-1-1 and then design the upgrade you want...

.....

I like putting AAA on a copter or six... slide 'em in for defense in a forward base, when the opps are using planes...

and if you can find where THEIR interceptors are.. you take your AAA copter and knock on the door.. their [presumably puny] interceptors come out and line up for slaughter like good little AI insects..

I like to design helicopter transports, which are great for getting a unit or two far quick, like a Probe Team into enemy terratory. Also, heli-colony pods can be great, because you can start a new base way 'out there.'

I think what he means is that you can't upgrade your 0-1-1 vanilla formers to Fusion Speeder Fungicide Superformers.

There is no way you can upgrade a 0-1-1 to any sort of speeder chassis.

I like blink singularity deathspheres (grav ship, blink, singularity reactor, singularity laser, deep radar), and drop hovertanks with antigrav struts, stasis armor, and singularity lasers. I also like gravship super singularity fungicidal formers. Gun 'Copters with Empath song and Hypnotic trance are good for worm defense. Conventional missiles are wonderful. Probe Cruisers are very nice. All of these units have even more tremendous offensive/defensive capabilities if you have the xenoempathy dome. Elite drop hovertank probe teams with anti-grav struts are excellent for ground raids, they can move 5 spaces over all terrain, and if you have xenoempathy dome, they can move 15 spaces through fungus!!
