Is there any way to get forest squares up to a 2 nutrient rating before the tree farms come along? If not, what is the best early terraforming strategy? I use tree farms and hybrid forests all over when they come along and I'm wondering if I can somehow get away with not constructing farms in the early game.

Unless you are making a major tech beeline for Tree Farms you are going to need some farms.
I always build farms in rainy squares and hope I get Gene splicing (lifting Nutrient restrict's)soon.
The key early game factor (other than in strange circ's) is population growth. I think that even if some time is spent building farms on merely moist land it is worth it early to make sure your pop keeps growing.

Unless you are going heavy for Tree farms, stick to farms on nutrient bonus squares and rainy squares, maybe even moist squares as well.
Its pretty far up the tech tree to get tree farms, and you could be stunting the growth of your colonies. Build forests in the dry land first and let it naturally spread. Plus, later in the game you can build condensors to increase food on the farms.

Before getting Tree Farms, build farms on Rainy (and if need be) Moist squares. Build farms on Mineral bonus squares unless arid, then build forest. On Nutrition bonus square, always build Forest. Build forest on all arid squares. Level (Ctrl + _) all rocky bonus squares so you can build Forest/Farm on them. Also, level any other rocky square when you have a free Former or two and let the forest expand.
Once Tree Farm is built, go back and replace Farms with Forests. Once Hybrid Forest is built, sit back and watch your faction blow everyone else away.

I normally have this lying next to me when I am playing, but don't only use this as you maybe need a farm to increase population or a mine to minerals.
