I was just wondering how many that disable Blind Research? I haven't this far since it's a quite refreshing change from Civ.

On a side not I gotta say that SMAC is the best thing since Civ; Civ being the best thing since sliced bread.

I leave it on, because it's more realistic that way.

When you start a new game, select custom rules, and go and unclick the X on blind research

I always disable blind research. If I want a particular technology, I want to research that technology, dammit!

I hate Blind Research, and so allways disable it. It gives me control, just like Civ2. (What was around bfore sliced bread... Bread??)

I also dislike Blind Research, but sometimes I leave it on. Keeps me a bit sharper.

There are two settings that I always play with, one is with blind research, it is simply more realistic (as was said).

Second is I turn the Unity pods off, so they only appear around the starting locations. This slows the development pace a bit, but not as much as tech stagnation does. Besides, it eliminates the tension of wondering if a pod is infested or has something useful in it, so I can concentrate on the tension of when I'll have to go to war with Miriam, who always seems to start as my neighbor.

Turning off the Unity pods is a human player penalty because the AI only seems to collect a pod if it looks like you are after it.

That's why in the later stages of the game you find so many pods still around. At that point of the game you usually get an Isle of the Deep or a sonar map of the surrounding area that you have already mapped.

I like collecting pods early in the game, but later on it becomes a drag unless you dedicate a unit or two to automatically explore. Even then, however, if the unit goes near one of your bases it will just duck in for a visit and never come out again.

I play blind research, and enjoy the change for the most part. First of all, I don't have the same degree of familiarity with the various techs I had with Civ II anyway, so that makes blind research a bit less painful. I don't miss not getting my target research or WOW. This may change as time goes on.

For example, it drives me crazy when the game is obviously denying me the tech for Hab Dome as an equalizer. This is the second game I've played as Morgan where the game has done this. As before, I'm just inching into the lead, and my most glaring need is the ability to expand bases. My preference setting is Build only, yet I'm getting Techs in Discover and Explore at higher levels than Build, with all prerequisites met. This seems too much like a cheat by the game.
