As a new comer to SMAC, I would appreciate any useful advise to help me start out

My best advice to you is to browse through the forum for advice and hints. Really. There was a thread here just a few days ago from someone else asking the same thing you have, I would bet you could probably find something there. There's lots of "buried" treasure here for newcomers, esp. in the S&T threads. If you can't find what you want set the preferences back to about 20-30 days worth of threads. It takes time, but there's gold in them hills. The veterans/oldtimers put it there for us to find.
Also: www.gameguides.com has an online guide that *might* help you out, you may end up totally disagreeing with some of what's there, but its a start. "Enhancement" 3.0 should be available there for download as well (its also a patch, I'd say mostly, but I haven't actually counted bug fixes vs. enhancements).
Enjoy the game, don't forget to sleep.

Also some good advice from the manual:
just fire it up and play a while. You'll make some mistakes and prob. get wiped out. But you'll have a much better idea what kind of questions to ask.
Then come back and ask away. You'll get lots of answers here.
