Guys, do ANY of you understand grouping in SMAC? If so, PLEASE help me : I'm desperate.

(1) Is there a designate "leader" of a group
(2) Can you have multiple "groups"
(3) If you can have multiple groups, how can you tell them apart?
(4) Can you give a "group" order like "auto explore"?
thanks for any help : Its my first Strategy game, I haven't a clue whats going on, but have just played it for 3 days solid :-(

This is not like Settlers or Warcraft. The various units can be put into automatic mode, but they can not be "grouped".

Cadfael,

They can be grouped together.

All you need to do is right click on the unit you are giving orders too. Then you click on Add to group button. A little menu pops up asking you to designate which units to group and other legitimate questions. Once grouped if you move that unit all the others in the group will follow it.

***You can tell if a unit is in a group when the litlle dash in the middle of its shield becomes white not black***

But how do you know which unit is the "lead"??? How do you have or differentiate between multiple groups?

It's a complete pain in the ass for me since I can't figure it out and am having to move all units individually since I have NO clue whats happening with groups.

Once you have built the group you dont move it by hand you right click on the current unit and click on the "Move group" Button. All the units in the group will then go where you tell them too!

Be gratefull for a group function at all! It makes it possible to use things like Drop Singularity Infantry in about 50 of them in one go. Simply designate it to group all ground units not on hold/load orders and then select any one member to orbitaly insert somewhere and all the others follow. Okay so it then takes 10 minutes for all your troops to rain down but better than by hand!

I have tried it a couple of times, but I could never figure out how it worked. Well, I will try again. Thanks for bringing this up.
