Which do you prefer to play on? Large maps do allow the player to build large empires with built up bases , before he/she gets into wars. This allows more strategic planning. However, small maps let you get right into the meat of the game, faction interaction, right away. I find small maps are a lot more excitting. I am playing right now an extremely excitting game on a tiny planet: I'm UoP, eradicated the Spartans early but they escaped, the Pk surprised attacked me and eradicate me (I escaped to an island off the coast of my capital), I landed my impact rovers and a colony pods back on my continent, founded a base, recaptured my capital, the Pk eradicated for good the Believers and then got eradicated permanently by the Hive, finally I discovered Air Power as things are heating up with the Hive. incredible pace, it is still very early in the game.

I prefer small maps. I like the interaction, like you said, but I think the key is that the end/mid game doesn't take FOREVER on small maps.

To me, the game is the same whatever the map.
But, the micromanagement is reduced (b/c of fewer cities) when there is a small map.
