I sort of new to the game. Just want to know what people think the best unit designs are.

Go to www.gamespot.com and they have some good ones there. I like submarine aircraft carriers myself, loaded with a mix of fighters, bombers, and marine infantry. Hard to detect and allows for quick landing invasions and airstrikes. Bring a radar ship with the carrier and launch aircraft at the enemy detected at distance. It helps keep enemy naval and air away from the carrier.

Submarine carriers are not allowed anymore in V3.0

I like 'Copters with no armor and hand weapons, with Empath Song and Hypnotic Trance, even better with Dream Twister and Neural Amplifier. Great for short range mindworm killers, especially in bases with high eco-damage.

My personal favorite are drop colony pods. Just imagine the suprise of an enemy when he realizes that you have colonized all the islands in an inland sea that you should have been able to access. 1 turn to drop, 1 turn to build city. This is the best when you have orbital insertion capability.

I Gotta go with a Singularity/Psi Gravship or Locust of Chiron. Gravvies can outrun anything, and they can decimate bases. Locust can control bases even thoough they're air units, which are great for an air attack

I think pretty much any unit with the chopper chassis is pretty damn good. Chopper is muy useful

One I'm building in a few bases now is an Elite Drop Shard AAA Hovertank, photon armor. They're expensive, but they can hold thier ground, and move an airdrop (orbital insertion) then 4 spaces, so I can drop outside range of base airdefense, and still attack if I need to, even though there is a penalty.

Well, I don't think that there's a "best unit design. Even if you have your top attack unit on your base, it doesn't help a bit if enemy is pounding you with half dozen gunships...

One unit type I like to use is a defence unit built on speeder chassis. They can be built early, and they're no more expensive than one built on infantry chassis, at least with the few first armor types. The fact that this unit has two moves makes it more than the basic garrison unit. If road networks are well developed, they can easily be relocated where you need them. Special abilities to use with these are ECM and AAA, maybe Trance early in the game.

Against early mind worms I simply build scout patrols enhanced with trance, and non-lethal methods when they're available, and useful under the prevailing social settings.

My favorite unit design is gas pods. As soon as i repeal that UN Charter i start the killing

As soon as I get Neural Grafting, I make all my Garrison units have ECM + trance or AAA + trance. This makes for incredible defense.

Forget armor on Needlejets. If they're doing their job right, they shouldn't be getting attacked anyways.

1. Drop-Pod Probe teams... Great, especialy when dropped in fungus. The enemy dosn't know what hit them.

2. Cloaked Sea formers (or better yet, Cloaked Gravship formers)... great if you want to do some terror-forming.

3. 1-1-1 Inf with non-lethal meathods (aka Rent-A-Cop) Drone control made easy.

what about a singularity chopper, those things can make repeted attacks and with a singularity ractor on board they are un-stoppable but for them to be most effective you must be the university to get in front with the research.

Also I never seem to have a need for rent-A-cops because for some reason my governors seem to take care of the drones??

Governers ay?
Well, I love my micromanagement so I never use them.

I was just wondering, has anyone designed a unit specifically to take the damage and another one design to attack and used them both as defenders?

Not specifically, but once I had a Gravship take 3 missiles in a turn, and survive! It was a blink singularity death sphere.

How about the cost of the unit you say that is the best. Also the way you use the unit is another thing, too. And don't forget morale level is important too.

Needlejet Colony Pod. Good for the mid-game, when you have the fusion reactor. You can just spray colonies to all those unclaimed little islands out there.
For endgame colonising, use a gravship chassis. Too bad you can't build sea colonies with 'em though.
