How many of you actually play on either of the Map of Planet maps? and if you do, how many times do you restart until your faction gets a decent starting point?

For those of you who go for the random maps, have you ever tried playing with a map diametrically opposed to the faction you plan on picking? Or do you always pick a map to your advantage?

I usually play until my doom is eminent, regardless of starting position. I am partial to map of the planet, or 50-70% water maps myself.

I like the excitement of discovery, so I never play Map of Planet.

I started a map of planet game last night. Yuck didnt like it too much. Probably try another but I had just bad luck on the start....I had Santiago to my north, Deidre to the west, and Yang to my northwest. And to the east was mindworm utopia heh bso it was tough getting colony pods through..finally I wiped deidre and sanitago out and was about to do the same to yang til I just got bored heh. Ill probably try it again later.

I play it but I often end up starting on the same point as my previouse game so I go for random maps 75% of the time.

I usually play random/all average/large planet. Actually, I have never played the map of "planet".

I always play on the map of the planet, but I guess when I'm bored I'm going to switch to random maps. After a while you learn to know and like the planet with all the landmarks and everything. I find it easier to compare the different games as well.

I have played every game so far on the Huge Map of Planet. Starting in different places makes each game a challenge. Knowing (in general, not detail) the layout of the world makes sense since it had been under observation for a period of time as the Unity was decelerating into the AC system. So knowing that there are four major land masses and being able to eventually figure out what part of the world you landed on and knowing where you are in relationship to the other land masses and named locations does not take any fun away from playing the game.

I have played around with the map editor, and have made a pretty cool map (extremely mountainous, wide climate variation, all landmarks including Nessus Canyon). Well, at least I think its cool, anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has messed around with one? I'm thinking of doing an Earth map, that would be cool, Europe, Asia, Americas, Africa, Austrailia, and a nice inhospitable south and north pole. 3 major oceans, and lots of islands, the map would have to be pretty big, anyone know of one already out there?

I've played two games on the huge map of planet. I've come to the conclusion that it's not as much fun because there's just way too much land, so every faction gets to expand madly and before you know it, there are so many bases to manage and so many units to move that each game turn can easily take 30 minutes or longer to play, and the game just gets terribly bogged down.

I've played a bit on the standard Map of Planet. It's a tough map in some respects - there seems to be a lot of fungus, and you can really get into a hole if you can't get your colony pods out fast enough (such as when you're starting near the Uranium Flats). OTOH, if you get the two mineral resources near the Freshwater Sea, you can probably break the game wide open, since nobody else will have a chance at the Secret Projects.

I like the Map of Planet, especially the Huge Map.

Playing the Huge map Talent level with the University, I landed next to the Freshwater source. Plus, 2 of the pods found Minerals on Rocky squares. My capitol had 14 minerals going by 20 turns. I was producing low-level Secret Progects one by one.

I stick with the random maps, I like an Island Hopping thing with Water Bases, so I guess I choose to my advantage
