Was in the middle of wasting Morgan when all of a sudden "boom!" a message comes up saying that one of my cities has been struck by a meteorin it's place is a new Garland Crater!Anything weird like this happen to anybody else? Any other weird stuff that might happen (non bug things)?

Yeah this is a favourite trick of the game. Tends to happen if you build too many SPsin one base.

There are several other rare events that can pop up -- in the hundreds of hours of play I've personally yet to see the asteroid hit but I know its there. The other one I can think of right now is the volcano that can pop up (a repeat of the usual one) somewhere on the map suddenly. Had it wipe out a couple sea bases of mine once. Nasty, but fortunately quite rare.

Here's an interesting thing along those lines. I was in a heated battle with a powerful Hive. He had a lot of Planet Busters and I had a lot more of the defense satellites.(sp) (Forgot the name) Anyway, right after my turn, a huge meteor shower took out all my satellites(sp)!! Guess what happened next. The Hive launched about seven, yes seven! PB's on me! Has this ever happened to anyone? I was VERY upset!

P.S. I won the game anyway!

The one I have encountered the most is the Volcano appearing, but I have seen both the Meteor Strike (Creating Garland Crater) and the Meteor Shower (killing my satelites). Are there any others?

The appearing vulcano is quiting regular, always after I have had a fungal bloom.
But once a turn after the vulcano appeared, there came a message that the vulvano erupted. Means all squares in radius of 7 or 8 became rocky, all terrain improvements lost, and the worst -1 energy on every square in every base for ten years!
All my bases rioted because of the lack of energy allocated to psych. I had to nerve staple every base.

BTW, why are Orbital Defense Pods abbrevated SP?
Or what does SP mean besides Single Player?

SP=Secret Project, usually, but I think he was indicating that he was unsure of the spelling of "satellites".

Maybe its a difficulty level thing?

I read in the stategy guide that the astroid impact only happens if you're in 1st place. Generally, the better you're doing the more likely it is that you'll get one for these really bad events.

My favourite weird thing happens when you are pacted to two factions that are in vendetta against each other.

In one game, my two pact buddies were pasting each other using my territory's countryside as a battleground. Oddly enough, my cities were neutral territory. In one of my cities units from BOTH factions were stationed.

Bet there were lots of bar fights that evening.

LOL, redfred. i've never had the poor fortune to be struck by a meteor, but, i've had a few volcanoes spring up on me.

Stingray, that exact same scenario happened to me, I was playing the Peacekeepers against Yang. My orbital defense pods were wiped out in a solar flare. The next turn Yang PB's 4 of my best cities.

Now for a side question: does anyone know how to cause these events (in alpha.txt)? It might be intersting to have a senerio where say astariod collisions happened every 25 years or something equaly unsettling.

I am paranoid. I really believe that the game punishes you for being untouchable.

I am even more paranoid. I believe the game switches off the heatsink to the CPU and makes it overheat, forcing you to fork out 750cash to replace the now-melted piece of circuitry and plastic.

I thought that was Microsoft's job?

RedFred, how'd you pact two factions that were vendetta'd against each other? don't pact brothers/sisters require you join their war or break the pact? how'd you not have to choose one or the other?
mcostant posted 09-01-99 04:52 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for mcostant
To SMACTrek - No, that's is Intel or AMD job: they need you buy another CPU .
Microsoft mess around with driver, so you need to upgrade your WinXX - full price - just to keep up with USB support and the like .

To Xentropy - No, sometime you can't force your pact brothers to peace, because one of them reply "I've been payed to destroy the evil ...." or something the like. But you can mantain your pact status, at least if you don't hurt the factions with other actions (opposite S.E. choices, probe against them, bully asking money/tech/bases). Just be carefull and watch your back, just in case one of the two become crazy and begin a sneak attack to you

Xentropy:

In this particular instance, Yang had surrendered to me and was submissively pacted. The other faction entered into a pact with me on equal terms.

When Yang surrendered I told him to stop fighting my friend. He said no way. After that I avoided speaking to either pact mate on account of the probability of one of the pacts unraveling.

Another rare event is being #1 on the depth chart and successfully staying in pact with #2 AND #3 without either being a surrendered submissive. Only happened to me once, playing Morgan.

...to clarify...

By saying "pacted on equal terms" I mean that there was NO surrender involved.

As long as you stay in Knowledge SE choice, you can do whatever you want and still be in a pact with Zak. Generally speaking, UoP is the best faction you can pact with. It usually gives you free techs if you're falling behind.
RedFred posted 09-02-99 02:29 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for RedFred
You got it, dilbert. I was pacted with UoP and the Gaians. I stuck to knowledge, green SE choices like glue.

...mind you, Zak and Lady D swapped #2 and #3 spots at least once. Don't know if that helped me stay on such good terms with them both.

I had one metor strike happen to me. It was 75 turns in (and I think that is the earliest it can happen) with the PK one the earth world map, and the first time ever on trandsend I had all of the 1st & 2nd level SP's. Just as soon as I Finally built the merchant exhange ( thats the one I usally lose) BOOM metor destroys 3 of my earlier bases. Luckly the ME was the only SP I lost. OTOH the base I built in the middle of the crater with a condencer became one of my best bases. What do they say about that...

I've never had an asteroid strike any of my bases or a volcano pop up. In fact the worst thing that ever happened was sunspots (I think). 'Course that's the worst ~random event~ that's ever happened to me. I've had people impose sanctions on me after nerve-stapling a whole bunch of my bases.
NotLikeTea posted 09-02-99 01:15 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for NotLikeTea  Click Here to Email NotLikeTea
I had the situation of several factions in one base blow up in my face once.

I was attacking a base of my enemy with artillery. Boom, boom, boom. Then, I see that one of the booms has struck a unit of my pactmate. That pact didn't last too long
