The Wall Street Journal today(8/5) has a large story by Dean Takahashi about Civ building games. (Yeah, I read the Wall Street Journal. You want to make something out of that? ) The story mentions CTP and Age of Kings, but AC is really the star attraction, as, indeed, it deserves to be.

This is really nice placement though, I must say. Front page of the second section, two columns. You really CAN'T buy adverising like that. About the only thing missing was a line drawing of Brian Reynolds. Maybe next week.

Anyway the WSJ has readership of something like 5 million so lots and lots of people will read it and plenty of them will probably buy the game. Sweet for Firaxis, of course, but also good for those who do buy it. There just isn't any other game on the market with as much play value as SMAC. Believe me, I've looked. I have high hopes for AOK, though.

It is nice to see SMAC get some mainstream attention. Now if only it were to get a killer review in PC Gamer....

So what did the article SAY...?

It was very favorable. Takahashi said he enjoyed playing it and thought the factions were well done.

On the down side there was a somewhat unfair comment about "you may need to go to the website and download a patch to get the game to work properly". While this is technically true, it could also be said about CTP or almost any other game on the market. I played SMAC straight from the CD for a long time without any real problems. The latest version is much superior and it's always a good idea to check for a patch with any game you buy, but this was a little uncalled for, no matter what the barbarians may say.
