Despite what Firaxis's press release claims, there's NO information about Alien Crossfire on EA's official SMAC site, unless they've hidden it even better than Microsoft hide their fix packs. The Press Release is on www.firaxis.com as a 28 July entry. It's near the top of the "front" page, so one can hardly miss it. The release itself is dated 29 July.
One should read the text carefully, using the null hypothesis of zero real change as a benchmark for assessing how much of the release is guff, and to tease out what Brian is truly proposing.
As I read it, "the two warring alien races" means that of the seven factions only two at a given time will be selected from the seven alien groups; the other five will all be human.
The alien factions seem to be more of the same, that is you could as easily create them for the current SMAC. The only exception _might_ be the "seafaring pirates".
Firaxis are promising a faction editor of their own.
Geosynchronous Survey Pods are too vaguely described, and Brood Pits sound like a sensationalist pitch to the low end of the market.
Unless they can write a much more informative summary, I expect that Alien Crossfire will NOT be a "major expansion pack" but just another example of marketing hype of fairy floss.
