I expected to see a flood of analyses of enhancement 4.0, but no. Is the community refocused on the game, probing its strengths and flaws anew? Has a wave of playtesting the new enhancement caused a lull?
Posters refer to a short list of bugs; is this short list the only legitimate one? The roll of a hundred lies ignored, and no one checks its bugs’ treatment?

Over at ACOL, we are starting work on a verified database of bugs either unaffected by v4, or new bugs caused by v4.

The biggest difference which is universally noted is the much longer time to launch SMAC and load games, at least multiplayer games.

In the next two to three weeks, we invite you over to see what we've come up with.

MtG

MtG,

Please correct your statement. My MP pbem turns take no longer to load than they did before. I've already received, played and sent on ten turns from eight different games and have NOT EXPERIENCED A SINGLE PROBLEM. Likewise with over 10 hours and 150 mission years of SP. So, you may want to verify your facts before making any sweeping generalizations regarding this patch.

MtG is not alone with his problems. After I installed v4.0, the time to launch the game and loading games (both SP & MP) went up significantly. It used to take less than two seconds to load a game, and now it takes over 10 seconds.

I'm running the game on a low-end system (P150, 64M), so the slowing down may be linked to this.

Actually I don't find the wait too long, I'm old enough to have spent 10 minutes while waiting for games to load back in the early 80's. Also, I usually play TI, so save/reload isn't all that common.

I have experienced longer loading times for both SP and MP. I am using a P2-450 with 128 Ram. Other than this I have experienced no problems.

I experienced the same problem. Much longer load times!

I found also that there is no wheelmouse support in the german version !

I´m going back to V 3.0. That´s the best decision i think!

Yes, we are once again enjoying playing SMAC.

But I am also experiencing incredibly long load/reload time. I am not sure if its the new CD Check, SMAC being picky about allocation/deallocation, rebuilding the graphics or what but...

For a saved HUGE game of mine that us to take my system 10 seconds to load and show, it now takes almost 3 minutes.

For a standard random map game of mine which took LESS THAN A SECOND, takes almost 40 seconds to load. This is all simple before installing patch 4 and after.

I do NOT have a low end machine. I have a Pentium2 400 MegHZ system with 128 Meg Ram and several gig free space on my HD free... all contigious.

The slow down is there. Let's hope its something more than a simple CD check.

I am still experiencing the same trashed DirectX as from before, and lost resources due to some conflict in accessing the sound on exit. (If SMAC is busy playing Music or Long Sound Effects when the "Please don't go" sound over is SUPPOSE to be played [and isn't], and I go ahead and quit, SMAC doesn't free up the resources it should. Leaves my machine a crawling mess that can only be restored by rebooting. HUGE pain, and I saw the same symptoms of lost resources at the "save and Exit" of PBEM prompt... without any sound over there.)

There seems to be several things in patch/enhancement 4 that are nice additions that weren't listed in the Readme, but in a week or two, people will be tearing into it, I think.

Until then, enjoy SMAC!

Hmmm... so far I've noticed the following:

1. The initial Firaxis Games splash screen stays present for c.10 seconds longer than it used to under v.3. There are also longer pauses during the loading stages of saved games - I especially notice a long pause between selecting the file to load (PBEM or solo play) and the initial "Faction name and game year" screen - anything up to 10 seconds, whereas it used to be instantaneous.

2. The CD-check dialog still appears. Did someone say that was supposed to have been removed? Or did I imagine that?

3. Good things: being able to see opponent SE choices in Faction Profile window; minimiap functioning correctly while in Diplomacy screen.

4. Very bad thing: when choosing Save and Exit in PBEM games, SMAC hangs indefinitely and can only be terminated with End Task. However, others have told me that this happened to them also under v.3, although this particular PC didn't show that symptom under v.3 and nothing else has changed in the PC's config.

I've noticed no other differences. I never suffered from the missile range thing under earlier versions, so I can't comment on that.

Darkstar:
Do you use MemTurbo? It seems to deallocate everything very nicely... I had endless problems with SMAC slowing down during play and then refusing to deallocate properly on quitting, but MemTurbo fixes all that with no need to reboot. Just a thought.

Nell... having trouble keeping up with two forums!

I have suffered from the missle bug and I am glad to say that it appears to have been fixed. I have my fingers crossed.

yep, load times for the game itself at start up and when loading a saved game have increased a lot. what used to load in 1-2 seconds now takes a good 10 seconds or so.

10 minutes? You were using a tape drive then. So have I, with my Electron (which I still have and is dragged out occassionally for games of Elite)
Zakalwe posted 07-09-99 07:48 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Zakalwe
Yes, the missile bug seems to be history now, though I've only experimented with one game so far. I had abandoned the TI game in 2300 or thereabouts, when Yang started lobbing missiles at me, regardless of the fact that his nearest base was halfway across the Planet (huge map). Now I managed to finish the game by Transcendence without any missile problems.

Chowlett,

Yes, I did use a tape drive. With a Sinclair Spectrum 48k, you didn't have much choice. Actually, Elite was probably the only game which took more than 10 minutes to load, but it was worth it! (BTW, last year I spent 4 hours trying to load Lords of Midnight, but to no avail, the tape was too demagnetised by time and exposure. Then I decided to download a Speccy emulator, and had a blast playing LoM, Doomdark's Revenge and Sabre Wulf!

This sucks. That loading thing kinda sucks. OK, I covered for all who have been banned.

Truthfully, I haven't played much with the patch yet. I've been playing Might & Magic VII. The loading thing is the only negative I've noticed. I'm going to have to play for a while to see if anything else arises.

Has anyone completed a game yet under 4.0?
If so, did you get the playback?

Is there now a difference between water and Spartan lands as there was in the original, or are they both black as in v3?

Holy Warrior...

We have heard the ocean is light blue now in playback. I am close to finishing my first full game of version 4, and plan on paying attention to confirm.

**sigh**

Add me to the growing list of people who are experiencing longer load times and a tendency for less, um, elegant exits under v4.0. A K6 300 with 64MB RAM may not be cutting edge tech, but it's supposed to be comfortably more than I need to run this game.

Please excuse the silly question, but is it just me or are the graphics spiffed up? Could very well be just me. I put aside SMAC back in the first week of May and between then and now, got a new monitor because the old one shorted out. New monitor is strictly generic and only a 15" (replacing a 14") so it's hard for me to believe that the difference I *think* I'm seeing is entirely the monitor. The unit graphics are definately looking sharper and the unit animation smoother to me. Then again, maybe my memory has a short in it too

Alex2000: well, there NEVER was wheelmouse support in US version! Darn!

I was waiting to install it, but now I'll do at least for testing purposes.

Nell, did you finally worked around MemTurbo expiration? Or did you buy it?

Anyone, could you PLEASE (on my knees) send me a copy of Elite for PC?????

No longer load times for me on SP...No problems on exiting....Yes the ocean is now a distinguishable light blue color in replay screen...no more infinite missile range....formers still suck if you automate so continue micromanaging.... Havent noticed anything else yet. My system is a Compaq presario 5020..PII 300..64 mb ram...8 gb HD..soundblaster live...ati rage pro fury 8mb..24 or 32 x cd-rom (dont remember offhand and dont feel like looking it up). So who knows.

I'm really very pleased with Patch (sorry, 'Enhancement')4.0

I recently upgraded to Win98 and found that the game was crashing every few turns, often enough to render the game unplayable, especially in Hotseat where you can't save and continue and there's no autosave.

Since applying the new version I haven't experienced a single error. That alone is enough to please me, as SMAC is no longer shelfware.

As for Spectrum nostalgia, try Carrier Command for the Speccy 128 on tape. Took 15 minutes to load, but boy did I love that game.
Dig out the URL for the World of Spectrum (Wos) archive if you want lotsa games to go with that emulator, Zakalwe.

yeah, it takes longer to load a game...also, you should be able to whine to the other factions about their SE choices like they can to you.
by the way, has anyone thought about mines? would they totally screw up the balance of the game, or would they work?
Natguy posted 07-10-99 02:23 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Natguy  Click Here to Email Natguy
Whoa...mines would be cool! (I dunno if they'd be able to work it into SMAC at this point though)

As for 4.0, does it fix the Self-Aware Colony & Space Elevator? I ask because my current game is not yet at that tech level and in Civ2 I always got the, uh, forgot the name, but, oh wait! Adam Smith's Trading Co. and I loved it, and the additional police sounds good, too.

Any ideas for 5.0? (FIRAXIS, we never stop )

I think that if you leave them alone too long, drone riots should spread.

Or maybe if you have too many for too long they overthrow you or something?

MajiK6pt5 posted 07-10-99 09:43 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for MajiK6pt5  Click Here to Email MajiK6pt5
here's one: in the higher levels, drones should be less of a problem, and the other factions (AI) should be tougher/smarter instead.
i mean, at my THINKER game, my home base has almost all drones without any facilities (on the psych screen). in real life, not EVERYONE hates the government!

Laying mines would be an atrocity (atrocious?), since it will be soon on Earth.

Mines?
Oh, the exploding mines, not the mining mines.

Where did you get the idea? From 'Stars!' or from 'Death Rally'? weirdos...

Report, a slight slowin of loading time, say 10%-20% on PII-333 128Mb

Hey man, like, man, like, uhh, like, leave Death Rally alone & stuff.

Patch 4 is out? So much for the newsletter I signed up for. I just d/led it, I'll see if I get the slowdown.

LackOfKnack posted 07-11-99 08:57 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for LackOfKnack
Well, I can't say much on the loading time for the game, but I think it is a little faster. Quitting is way faster now, leaves instantly, doesn't bog the computer. Gameplay is a little faster, save loading is faster.

I have the same specs as jimmytrick listed.

Analyst, I think it's your monitor. I didn't notice a difference.

And for some reason, Firaxis keeps sending all the faction .txt and .gif files. Aprox. doubles the size of the patch file, even though there is NO change to the files. The only files that changed are the interface and ter1.gif files (out of the graphics) I think.

patch4 seems to working ok except longer loading times, and annoying playback probs with audio with sp videos, have 233 128ram heaps hard drive and soundblaster live...it seemed to run better on patch 3 with no problems,,however i havent had any crashes that some of you above refer to

Ugh, Ugh Ugh!

For the first time, I've been hit with the "this patch made my game worse, not better" syndrome. In all the versions of the game, I've never had any basic problems with the program, such as the audio tatic/feedback, crashing, etc. reported by others. In just a few sessions since installing the patch, I've had the game lock up at start, experienced several audio glitches (voiceovers infected with loud buzzing sounds) and had a crash on exit. I'm also experiencing the much longer load times reported by others.

Looks like I'm going to have to uninstall and revert to version 3.0. Very Dissapointing. *sigh*

There is definitly a longer wait for new/load game... out of curiosity, people with a longer wait, what make is your processeor. My delay is only a second or 2 on a K6-2 300.

I would say 5 seconds on a p2 300. Sony whatever. It used to be about 1.5 seconds (not that I timed it or anything). It just seems to be about 3 times as long.
cousLee posted 07-13-99 02:38 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for cousLee  Click Here to Email cousLee
same here. longer loads.

(wondering how fast Firaxis could put out a V4.1 adressing JUST this. no new landmark required).
