Is there a way to remove a human player? (i.e. no response from a player in several days, and need to switch it to a AI?)

When it's that player's turn, press SHIFT-Q, the game will ask if you want to "wimp out" of the multiplayer game. Answer yes, save the game and reload it, then press "End turn"
The faction is now AI-controlled.
