My all time favourite at the moment would have to be Forsaken or Unreal. SMAC is the Strategy Game of my choice but in gaming terms it is not quite good enough to be the all time best game ever.

Mmmmm, Video Games, a topic very close to my heart...

Favourite strategy games:

SMAC: Enough said already.

Civ 2: A classic, but I've overplayed it.

Railroad Tycoon 2: Another Sid Meier classic with an improved graphic engine

XCOM 1 & 2: Fantastic Games.

Starwars: Supremacy / Rebellion: Crap graphics, but I have a major weakness for anything Starwarsesque

But my all time favourite, best game I have ever played ever would have to be...

Zelda, Octarina of Time.

No really, it is. I've been playing video games for over twenty years now and Myamoto (sp?) is simply the god of game design. Z ot is just a gorgeous, involving, intuitive, gripping, bug free MASTERPIECE. And no, it's not just for kiddies. It is worth buying a N64 just to play it. If any more proof is needed, it is the only game my girlfriend will actually play. (To quote her on SMAC: "Isn't that the brown one ?")

Finally, Honourable Mentions for:

Final Fantasy 7: Great plot, low replay value.

Quake 2: "Fragtastic."

Bell and Brandrens "Elite" : I spent many, many hours playing that one.

Umbra: the man who needs to get out more...

Jesus Man, I thought I was bad, Fused to computer at 27, playing a strategy game. The problem is the strategy game is just too good. SMAC is too good for my liking. I need something that will force me to stop playing computer games, in fact I bought thqt game today entitled "Call to power" the game I have been dreaming of to get me off my arse and go and find something better to do. Umbra do you find that if you play a game long enough you get bored of it? Well I certainly dont and that is why Call to power is my dream game. It is crap enough for me "The king of all gamers" to not want to play it. Now that is saying something.

Oh yeah, There are a couple of Games that should be added to the hall of Fame

Wing Commander Prophecy
Sim City

Some games do get repetitive after a while, naturally. One of the reasons I rate SMAC and Civ is the "Generate Random Map", so each game you play is different. To be honest though, most games I play will eventually get "bumped" by the latest bit of code, I still haven't got round to finishing Baldurs Gate because SMAC came along ! And Xwing Alliance, Startrek: Birth of the Federation and Final Fantasy 8 are just around the corner... But I think SMAC will be on my HD for a long time to come.

I agree about the replayability issue. Most games I play once, then I'm done. The random map in SMAC and Civs does make them very addictive. As a matter of fact, if SMAC was not released yet, I'm sure I would have a current game of civ2 going.
As far as best games I've ever played, I think a special nod should go to Civilization for being the original. without this groundbreaking game I don't think we would have ever seen Civ2 or SMAC.
I really like AD&D type roleplaying games, although good games of this genre are kind of hard to find. I did buy and start to play Baldur's Gate, but with the release of SMAC I haven't put too much time into it. I especially liked the old gold box AD&D games I played them all and liked them.
Another recently released game I purchased and didn't get a chance to mess with too much is Thief: The Dark Project. Again this looks cool, but SMAC pretty much rules when it comes to game time.
First person type shooters, I liked Dark Forces2: Jedi Knight.

Well for me it's pretty much down to the dream stadium, if I dream about it I've played it too much
Here's a list of my head in no particular order.

Ultima Online - My all time #1 favorite and the only game I've played almost daily for 2 years, also the #1 ****ed up and bugged game ever.

SMAC - More than a worthy followup to Civ
(I hate CIV 2 - eeeekkkk I said it )

Civ 1 - kickass.

Elite - The only game which I've played in shifts with two other guys 24/7 for a week.
God I felt bad when we hit 480 hours.
(Remember that it had a timer that told you how long you've played it ?....geez I had a lot more spare time 10 years ago :P)

Supercars - Amiga Classic.

Warlords 1 - Another Amiga classic.

Railroad Tycoon 1 - I had that ding ding cash sound in my head for weeks.

MOO 1 & 2 - I didn't really like MOO2 that much but played a lot due to lack of better to do It's way too much like MOO1 (Just like Civ2 is to Civ1).

Magic the Gathering. - Still got it installed, very good for 10 mins of instant action when you're in a hurry.

Baldurs Gate - No replayability but very good the 1st time, best RPG ever IMO.

F15 Strike Eagle 3 - Linked that one for 30 hours strait.

GP2 - Still king of racing games.

The old TSR Forgotten Realms games, Pool of radiance etc.

Dang I really know how to waste my time

/Dev

ELITE! that was brilliant that game. Primative but addictive. But once you had cheated and you had the best ship their was nothing else you could do. Anyway I began to hate it because my brother (Two years my younger) decided that he was better at controlling the ship and I had to control the mouse. The problem came when he did not want to pause the game when a pirate flew across our screen and I had to click furiously to try and lock on it. Ah, memories it seemed like just yesterday...

Fraxis take note... SMAC fans want to see Sid Meiers "REALY VERY GOOD INDEED", a Brian Reynolds design.
