I have a contact that lives around Yugoslavia. When I asked him what HE would do with the troops that were captured, he replied:
"what? they're criminals. there is no war going on, as US are not in war with us. They're no war prisoners so you don't have any right to demand their safety, as they killed our people. If it is to me, I would kill them. Sorry, but too many civils died for me to be "forgiving" this time."

=======================
Now this person is a pretty good friend of mind and we have argued quite a bit regarding this pretty contraversial topic. But think about this: all of you are saying to nuke serbia and use nerve gas and EMP shells but think about this: Think of all the civilians that live right around Belgrade. This person is one of them. Sure they must hate all Americans by now but we can't just kill them. One of hte goals NATO has is to ensure civilian safety despite destroying everything that makes up his war machine. Guys, think about what you are saying. We certainly have a need to be there but that doesn't mean we can kill everyone.

BTW: for those of you slow with news, those troops are not going to be tried as war criminals (see http://dailynews.yahoo.com/headlines/ts/story.html?s=v/nm/19990404/ts/yugos
lavia_usa_captives_2.html).

I think it is important to remember that the Serbiens are't the enemies, but Milosevic. I'm pretty sure, that he wouldn't have the support among the civilists, if there was anything close to free media over there.
I'm from Germany, and so I have something against ethinc cleanings only a few hundred miles away.

NATO screwed up royally by getting involved in Kosovo. How is this not a war? A group of countries bombing a sovereign country (isn't that an act of war?)

"They killed our people"? These guys were in Macedonia on a peacekeeping mission, they haven't killed anyone. Elemental007, I think your Serbian friend has been listening to Milosovic's propaganda a little too much. The talk about nuking Belgrade and using nerve gas and such is just morons being morons but if they harm those soldiers the Serbs kidnapped from Macedonia things could get very nasty. As for civilian casualties, I find it strange that even NATO seems to be more concerned with the Serbian civilians than with the Albanians whom we are supposed to be protecting. Please understand that I don't hate the Serbs; from my side of the Atlantic I see very little difference between any of the Balkan peoples. The reason why the Serbs are being targeted is that they are the winners and therefor the ones doing the ethnic cleansing rather than the victims of it. If the Muslims were the stronger faction I suspect they would be behaving just as brutally. For myself I think that we shouldn't have gotten involved in the Balkans in the first place but now that we are committed we really should be fighting to win and not just bombing to "send signals" the way we are doing now.

Hmm They killed our people. What about all the kosovo albanians the serb police and army have killed.

I know we in the west are being victomized by western propaganda, we probably aren't told the whole truth either, but if nothing was wrong in kosovo the (hundereds of)thousands of refugees wouldn't be fleeing their country.

I'm so amazed that ethnic cleansing still happens in Europe, I thought we learned the lessons of WW2, but I guess I was wrong.

PS I don't hate serbs, I don't hate americans. Hell I don't hate anybody. I really hope that russia's and Israel's attempts to a diplomatic sollution come though. The sooner the bombing stops AND the kosovo refugees can return home, the better.

I thought that the captured troop was part of the UN forces? In that case Milosovic effectively attacked all member nations of UN.

The UN forces are there to observe only. A couple of friends of mine was stationed in the area as part of NATO forces there. Their mission (this was last year before all hell broke loose) was to protect UN forces, because the UN forces are only allowed to return fire and don't have any heavy weaponry at all (and thus rely on NATO if bombarded by heavy artillery).

Beating up on UN troops is not the way to go if he (Milosovic) wants to get out of this in one piece. Associating with convicted warcrimminals won't help much either.

Rune heavily firing at UN himself (in SMAC though, which perhaps is what Milosovic should stick to as well?)
