I know the game just came out but I was wondering if any one had first impressions after playing both games. I like the idea of 32 civs playing at once but a lot of the other features don't impress me (or maybe I'm just biased in supporting SM/BR) I don't trust the Apolyton CTP forum for unbiased opinions. At least here I know which people are biased which way.

So the question is: IS CTP ANY GOOD COMPARED TO SMAC?

Graphics : CTP wins hands down , no surprise here . The map feels alive with all the animations going on ( something like Age of empires ).

Micromanagement : Big negative for CTP . There are no GOVERNORS and as far as I can tell nothing can be automated , one of my favorite new features of SMAC.

Combat system : CTP . The stacked combat is fun . But then again combat in SMAC is satisfying as well . In CTP u move units around the map as stacks , whereas in SMAC you have to move each unit in the stack individually . Hope this will be changed in SMAC V4.

Diplomacy : SMAC so far . More options and the leaders have personality. No borders in CTP , though I havn't proceeded far enough into the game for that to be a problem yet.

So far CTP is not quite what I wanted and I don't think it will be enhanced to my satisfaction , but I will give it more time
before I decide to take it back .

'Is CTP ANY good' - most definitely yes. It offers some improvements overm CivII and has some unique approaches (terraforming, combat, trade). But, as I said in my 'First impressions' thread, I don't consider it a breakthrough game like CivII and, if you will, SMAC. 'Is it worth getting' - if don't need the ~50$ badly, yeah, get it. Otherwise hope that Activision offers a demo or looks for someone who has it & will let you have a closer look. I personally am not quite sure whether I'd have bought it had I had the chance to test-drive ist first.

Adios, CC

CC: Actually I just found your LONG post which really clears things up for me. You seem to give a balanced view of the games. Hopefully a demo will come out so I can evaluate first hand, but for now I think I'll enjoy SMAC and wait for patch 4.0 to add the Bridge/Canal attribue to Formers (wishful thinking)
