how in the world do I use the Alien things I find in the pods?

IF you are refering to the alien artifacts then take them back to a base with a network node and you will be asked if you want to connect it to your node, answer yes and you should get some nice new technology.

I have done so but both times the Network Node was completed while they are in the base. I have yet to be asked that question do I need to leave the base after it is finished and have them rejoin to be asked that question?

no, if you have an artifact in a base (on hold), and that base builds a network node, the artifact "wakes" up and you should get the message asking if you want to "link it to the network node". Note: you can only link 1 artifact to a network node.
they can also be used to help produce prototypes. they are worth 50 minerals in that capacity.

Maybe you have to move the artifact out of the base and back in. I know that when I send a ship containing artifacts into a city, nothing pops up unless I move the artifact out of the city and then back in.

You don't even have to move it out and in... just hit "H" to hold and you will get the question.

I have also notice that if you move an alien artifact into a unity pod it's gone to "another dimension". That sucks!
Anyway, isn't it a little strange that you can link an ALIEN artifact to a network node; what great combatibility! Is the network controlled by a Mac or a PC ?
