(sorry...I tried to make a big blank post...you know...fight for SMAC for a change just see what it feels like...but it's clearly not within my power...I tried...forgive me...)

*lol*

Cute.

I *might* get CTP, but... not sure. The mechanics seem nice, but I'd have to change all of the 'ridiculous' units just 'cos I wouldn't be able to stomach them. But I'll definitely d/l the demo.

In all honesty, there are plenty of reasons to buy CTP.

You only run LINUX
For some reason, your local computer game dealers have boycotted (sp?) all Firaxis games.
You actually LIKE the idea of using televangelists to attack enemy cities.
Do don't realize that this is a sequel only in name and concept.
You're a history buff who hates science fiction.

I'm sure there are others, but my head hurts from trying to come up with good points on CTP, so I'm gonna go take a couple Excedrin and lie down for a bit.

10. to be able to hang at the CTP forums and won't having to listen to Yin's constant complaining

9. to get back at Firaxis for all their patches and the time some have waited in Europe to get them to fix problems

8. you have suffered from SMCceptance and hope to get cured by buying CTP: a/ It might be better(you happy) b/ It might be worse (you happier about SMAC)

7. to get to build those Neanderthal like warriors and finally be able to a/ meet someone else who don't pretend to understand the SMAC techs b/ pretend them to be someone else on this forum after losing a discussion

6. to get back at Brian Reynolds for wanting you eaten by Mindworms and thinking it funny (I had nightmares after that one)

5. to not having to see those annoying Terraformers dance like Indians around your bases

4. to finally hear a Girl's voice without having to be afraid of seeing Miriam's face

3. to be able to use slaves a/ without someone pointng to the History of the United States b/ to be able to pretend you have caught Yin

2. believing the game has features that enhances gameplay and makes it more interesting, not features that complicates what's not interesting

1. To get to build the Contraception wonder

And um, Yin, I meant all of it

Freddz,

Number 10: Clearly wrong. As soon as I get the game, I'm hitting the CtP Forum hard. With all the practice I had here, I'm destined to be a hit over there.

Number 8: Exactly right.

Number 3: I can't wait for the slavery debates.

Number 1: I would add the Masturbation Wonder if at all possible, but they probably already stopped taking suggestions.

Hey, good one yin. A breakthrough for modern science...late in the 19th century, after decades of backbreaking labor, physicists working out of Ball State University finally discover the theory on of masturbation...mankind will never be the same again.

Jokes aside, I do think most fans of SMAC should get CTP. Why? Because it will most likely be another big time strategy game that will eventually become a classic. Will you play it more then SMAC? Probably not but I bet you would get more then your moneys worth from the game. Take advantage of the this years strategy games. What a relief from all of the clones, RTS, FPS we have been seeing the previous years! Sure is fun to be playing SMAC besides Starcraft all the time and when CTP is released I can play that also.

Hey Yin, I thought you had no reasons to buy CTP But clearly you have one: To be able to participate in the big SMAC/CTP discussion. Yup, I agree, it will be fun.

The most fun about it is that so many have already decided whether the game sucks or will be great depending on just a few units or wonders, or mainly because of loyalty to Firaxis(or to worship to BR+SM) or anti-loyalty to them. And that will make it just more fun...

Yeah, but it almost seems unfair to those poor people that the Freddz/Yin combo is headed their direction. But, then again, I heard the Irman is lurking around there, too, so that will give us some focus.

I figure as long as Brother Greg doesn't catch wind of this diabolical plan, we're home free!

Yes, lurking I am in the CTP forums. I've already blasted the stupid units and contraception wonder, but I must see how it plays, to see if I might get it.

Imran,

Sorry. I wrote your name "Irman" up there. But, hey, don't you like that better?

[This is a flame-free post, brought to you by the makers of Call to Power--who urge you to ask this question: "Hey, ever wonder why they call it a Wonder?"]

ARGH!!!! Will someone please tell me what is the problem with the contraceptive wonder??? Like I posted before, I read an article in Newsweek, where the scientific communitee was polled as to what THEY thought were the most important breakthroughs in history. And what was featured in the article Imran??? The pill. Though I no longer remember the complete justification of its ranking, I remember that birth control is said to have sparked modern day feminism. If the scientific communitee feels that contraceptives were a major breakthrough, than what is the problem??? Perhaps it should be labeled as a tech instead of a wonder, but even still, birth control was an important development of this century. You have to look beyond the label to see its true importance.

Yes, but...

Wonders of the World:

Pyramids
Stonehenge
Effel Tower
The Colossus (see a pattern)
Contraception! (WHAT?!)

Now, which one does not beling?

I see only one pattern, that you judge all great projects/advances in humanity based on mud and brick.
yin26 posted 03-26-99 02:41 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for yin26  Click Here to Email yin26
I always thought that the best Wonders were physical things located in your empire that took a long-long time to build and caused other civilizations to...well...wonder.

"Wow! How'd the Imranians do that? Better not mess with them/Better kill them fast."

The pyramids can't be shared. They can only be revered, outdone, or conquered. I personally like those kinds of Wonders.

Contraception, however important to our species, is most important to the degree that it does NOT benefit only one civilization or a newlywed couple in Florida.

That's what's wondrous about contraception: its global/species-wide implications. However, I realize that an "Everybody rejoice, even the damned Imranians" philosophy runs counter to the "I made it. I should get the bonus" kind of thinking that we want in such a game.

But logically, if I discover Contraception, EVERY civilization should feel the good effects (of course, they should also send me lots of money). Or if I refuse to share such a major technology (even after being offered a reasonable price) other civilizations should sanction/attack me.

Now, to be fair, Cure for Cancer is conceptually very similar, but nobody complained about that one, did they? There's a prejudice we have, I guess, toward curing diseases v. preventing unwanted births. Both are equally important, but:

We all face the specter of Cancer.

On the contrary, thanks to SMAC, few of us will ever have sex again (if ever), so Contraception is a non-issue. (This is where the brilliance of the MASTURBATION WONDER begins to take shape...)

Now that I think about it, I bet Cure for Eye Strain would have received much more support from gamers.

TheRob posted 03-26-99 04:49 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for TheRob  Click Here to Email TheRob
Actually, you're likely to play CtP longer than SMAC. SMAC has a lot of cool stuff, but the start of the game is exactly the same as the Civs, what with the Archers n' Chariots. CtP on the other hand will have a lot of new stuff, and hence a lot more to explore.

Of course, this all assumes that the game really is as balanced as they clame it is

Have a nice day!

Imran Siddiqui posted 03-26-99 03:15 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Imran Siddiqui  Click Here to Email Imran Siddiqui
Yes, but SMAC is deeper, with 5 ways to win, territorial disputes, a council, atrocities, etc. All things that CTP doesn't have. Those things make SMAC all that more fun to play.

Oh, and another thing, Cure for Cancer should be a wonder, because basically to find the cure, you need to know the genome, and so, basically the Human Genome Project (which is in SAMC, I know). To find that cure, genes must be mapped. Much better than Contraception (I still laugh when I see that!).

Hey, Imran what's your problem? You don't like games that make you laugh?

More seriously though, I find it hard to believe that a nation would keep a secret like Cure for Cancer.... and probably all nations would gain it from spying pretty soon anyways or some scientist selling for the good of mankind. Hmm, doesn't this all remind me of some SMAC wonder(s)... maybe I'm wrong

I cant wait for CTP either. It seems as if it might form a twin peak with AC in game strategy playing. The poster is brilliant, the metamorphosis from Roman soldier to cyber-warrior! How did the devils at Activision know exactly which buttons to push on me!

However, it is ominous that as far as the UK is concerned the release date has been put back twice - now I am faithfully promised that it will come out next Friday, 2 April whereas I had previously been faithfully promised it would come out yesterday.

Still, I dont think I could buy a game which came out on 1 April, April Fools Day over here. But I hope the delays only signify marketing problems and not bugginess! I dont want to go through with CTP the problems I have had with AC!

Live long and prosper.

One important thing you guys seem to be missing, "WHERE THE HELL IS THE 3D GRAPHICAL TERRAN LIKE IN SMAC"! I'll tell ya, there is no 3d terran in CTP because they are just improving on the old code of Civ2 thats why!
They might as well just come out with a MOD pack like they have before, you know those ones that feature new units and bla bla bla. Thats why Civ2, CTP, and SMAC are so powerfull, their custimization. So is CTP just another MOD pack for Civ2 or is it actually a new game?
My choice --- MOD Pack

Freddz: Ctp is not a game that makes you laugh. It's a game you laugh AT. Big difference.

"Chinese Evangelists have converted the city of Blah. We have lost control of Contraception."

Thats laughable. Especially since you should have used your park ranger to stop it happening.

Yin,
I don't think I ever want to read the following, thank you.

"The Americians have captured Paris. We have lost control of Masturbation."

Hah!

THAT'S funny! Perhaps another idea for a thread is forming?

"Peruvian eco-terrorist assasinate one of your prominent researchers: All research on Jello Shots has come to a halt."

This is high comedy. Those guys at Activision are geniuses!

Since CPT will be probably shipped with a bunch of bugs (delays with release seem to be good indicators), I wonder what would happen if one install both games in the same folder. Would bugs cancel each other, or would they multiply?
