Back before the forums were wiped, I posted a note complaining about being addicted to these SMAC forums. Judging from the responses, I was not alone.

Well, thanks to Yin and the Yin-bashers, I am cured. I am so tired of reading the crap on the boards these days.

I take no position on the validity of the arguments on either side. I'm just tired of it. The rancor has ruined (for me, at least) what was the most enjoyable game discussion community on the net.

So, goodbye. I will especially miss the intelligent give and take with the gaming old-timers and the TI players.

Flame me all you want. I won't be around to read it.

Bill

Silent it should not be. Stop the idiotic bickering please, all of you [and I include myself]. We want to encourage people to stick around, not drive them away.

I'm not familiar with other game forums, but this one is a community. I feel I know a lot of the people on these boards as well as my school friends. Let us not bring a divorce down upon this family. Let us not crucify these forums upon a cross of mindless debate, let us not press down upon our own heads a crown of divisive posts...

[With apoligies to William Cullen Bryan.]

In life, trouble at mill gets turned into trouble at home. So it is with these forums. The divisive posts (okay, not the 'SMAC sucks it deserves to be Warezd' crowd) exist because there is something dividing us - the debatable quality of the final product.

Borodino, thou art the (pen)ultimate peacekeeper. Keep it up.

Not positive, but isn't it Jennings Bryan?

Wow, a cure for addiction. Keep it up, Yin! Maybe I'll be able to leave my computer if this continues!

Taterbill:
Don't know if you are really gone or not, but don't be driven off. Fight back by regaining this forum for those who want to discuss the merits and possible improvements to games like SMAC. How? Grit your teeth, skip the divisive posts, and resist the urge to respond to the nonsense. I believe this to be the responsibility of the true gamers out there. FIRAXIS and other such companies need our support and constructive feedback in order to survive and flourish. It can be very discouraging to see your user forum wither and die because of a few self important malcontents with Tourette Email Syndrome.

I think the game is attempting to break new ground, but needs some help. Some of the ideas posted here have, quite frankly, been brilliant (none of mine, of course. All I have is a tremendous grasp of the obvious). Start a new thread on an idea for further improvement; the reward may be seeing your needs result in an improved gaming experience.

On the other hand, it is really just a game. Good to keep that perspective, too...

Giant Squid is right it is William Jennings Bryan, one of the most important presidental canidates that never got to be president, he was famous for his cross of gold speech as Borodino mentioned.

<blushed embarrassment>

Um, yes, it was William Jennings Bryan to whom I alluded. William Cullen Bryant was a American poet of the nineteenth century, most famous for his "Thanotopsis".

Actually, I am very close to following taterbill. When coming to a Board becomes a hassle, it is just makes sense to stop coming back for more abuse.

However, in the past couple of days, the content and the civility has dramatically improved, earning a reprieve and a degree of hope. So please keep it up and not drive people away.

(although all warez supporters should be flogged)

Warez supporters should be identified and punished to the fullest extent of the law. They are stealing.

I am not fanatical with regard to copying software. There are a few cases where I had no real intention of buying the game, but I wanted to try it out. In those cases, I have burned copies of games. Every game I have WANTED, though, has been purchased (including, especially, SMAC).

Organizing a web site with the sole purpose of illegally distributing intellectual property is a completely different level of activity, however. There is a real potential to hurt the industry, and the gaming industry is just too harsh an environment for truly creative developers to let that kind of activity continue. (Look at the recent acquisition of Talonsoft as a perfect example of how harsh it is.)
