I don't build roads everywhere because I rarely need them. If my cities are adequately connected, I'm happy. But when I take over a computer-controlled continent, it is covered with roads. With all those roads it is hard to tell what is underneath them. you can use "t" to remove the graphics layer by layer, but doing that all the time gets annoying. CivII had much thinner roads (though rails were thicker). I have modified the texture.pcx to make the roads a lot thinner. I also used lighter colors to gve it more contrast. You can actually tell the difference between a jungle square and a forest without pressing your nose to the screen. Maybe Firaxis should do the same.
