I have just had a surrendered faction (some 100 years earlier) attack me! The surrendered faction was the Spartans and after they had surrendered to me I left them alone and they regained a reasonable amount of power again. They then launched a surprise attack on me! I thought that surrendered factions NEVER did this unless you comitted an attrocity (I haven't). What's going on? Has this happened to other people too?

Did you commit any atrocity? |

I read that somebody else had the hive jump on them. In my current game on transcent the Spartans have surrendered to me, But I feel that they are not very submissive with their large empire and planetbusters... - I did make sure that I had a planetbuster myself, so they would not think me too weak. Santiago has allready tried to lift the ban on atrocities once...I don't think that it is a bug; it makes the game more real! (remember: only the warlike factions have been seen to do it for no apparent reason) |

Someone from Firaxis, I don't remember who (I think either Brian or Jeff), said that factions are not required to honor their surrender. This comment came in an old post in which someone complained that they were voted as supreme leader and a surrendered faction did not accept the ruling, forcing the person to go out and destroy the rogue faction. It's realistic enough for me. For example take a look at Germany, did they honor their surrender after WWI? They did a great job of rebuilding and tried again 20 yrs later. |

Yes, Germany is apposite. If you want a surrendered faction to remain under your thumb, then occupy their bases and make sure that you maintain an industrial advantage sufficient to build and support more force on their land and in their bases than they have.If you cannot, then eventually your weakness may cost you. |

If you get really desparate, start building horribly situated sea colonies (like on ocean squares so they can't build any enhancements) then trade those for the faction's industrial capitals. Best thing to do is go to the base operations status scren and check your best bases, then click the faction's symbol. It should give you a list of best base for minerals, energy, garrison, population, and some others. Just keep trading worthless sea colonies for good bases. If they can't build any enhancements because of the ocean territory, they won't have any minerals in production, therefore they can't build ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!! Imagined if you terraformed a huge area of ocean, then built tons of bases the minimum distance apart. Global conquest in a few turns! |
