I have vented my frustration here a few times. Issues that is my opinion, make this game so seriously flawed that I can not enjoy it.

And then I got an e-mail. Someone that has played the demo, loved the 'demo' and wants the game.

Purchase price $49.95
Selling Price $30 minus $4.30 cents shipping

It only cost me $25 for a month of total frustration, anger and some seriously non-healthy thoughts about what I would love to do to Sid Meyers reputation. (fortunately) this game will accomplish that on its own. And I won't have to bother.

I am very happy for all of you that love this game. Hey there are some that loved Electronic Battle Ship - another turn based strategy game

So adieu for now. I may come and visit the board, but my computer is a few dozen mega-bytes emptier. My shelf has a little more room, and my blood pressure is a little lower.

Glad you found relief to your problems. But please don't come back. Why would you do that anyway?

Thank you for a refreshingly polite, calm, and well written post. I'm happy you've found a solution. Adieu.

now, if only the rest of you people who have nothing to do but complain about this game could do that.

Good Riddens!

Is it any wonder that the Old-Timers are departing and transcending?

Q: Like I said, it's only a temporary phase. And there's already some serious SMAC convernsations being run - check out the Transcendance thread, for instance.

Well I am right there with Storm Kindler. I traded SMAC against the purchase price for CTP. Who knows if CTP will be any good. I know of 13 other people who have also gotten rid of SMAC and that number I am sure will continue to rise. Happy SMACing for the rest of you. Enjoy all the patches and problems. Sid see you for the next game.

Like I said: Did you try it on ANOTHER machine? Don't listen to what 13 other people said, try it youself!

I'll never fathom the spoiled-brat lame-brainedness who think: "My machine's perfect!". Sorry, but I've always found a way around problems with games I REALLY wanted to play...

And while I'm still hot on this topic, yes I did have a "problem" with SMAC - the movies would crash when the program would try to switch over to them. So, stomp off in a huff whining for my money back? Nope, scanned the bug postings here and noted a reference to upgrading DirectX to v6.1, post by a Jeff from Firaxis. Sounded like this could be a generic brushoff, but thought I'd give it a try.

True, this required (whimper, moan):

1) Noting the name of the VxD driver in the GPF message box. This confirmed that it was DirectX related, although it might require a sound or video driver upgrade;
2) Finding the driver file on the HD and getting its version and manufacturer from the "properties" popup menu box;
3) Downloading the DirectX software from Microsoft's site and running the installation;

The I ran SMAC and have never had a problem with the movies since, so Jeff wasn't talking out of his hat.

If you want to operate a computing machine, you ought to learn how to drive it, or else just check out of this early phase of the Computer Age and wait for real Ease of Use to come along like the rest of the AOL'ers.

Maybe it's the machine you all oughta take back - for good.

I had approximately the same experience, except I didn't try the message boards here first. My copy of SMAC would crash on startup. I'd go to a black screen, and then poof! back to the desktop. No error messages, nothing.

I checked the driver on my (admittedly lame) Revolution 3D and found that the stupid install program had stuck in a beta driver with multiple-monitor support. I downloaded the latest WHQL driver, applied it, and SMAC started fine. Haven't had a single crash since... knock on wood.
