Are we in the UK going to be subjected to
another company totally ignoring us.
It remains to be seen.

This is REALLY pissing me off. I am beginning to think FIRAXIS just made the patch so they could play the game themselves, and knowing they had already made their money, couldn't be bothered to take the effort to make a European one. They managed to implement PBEM and Hotseat in just 8 hours, if they really wanted to get the European patch done they could.

As much as I love Alpha Centauri (and Civ, and Civ2) I'd have to agree with you on this. One of the main reasons I bought AC was that it would have multiplayer with PBEM - us UKers can't afford to go online for long periods of time to play games because we have local call charges, so the only way we can really do multiplayer is by PBEM.

And the patch still isn't out. I think we all appreciate how good a job Firaxis did on AC, and how hard they worked, but the game *is* incomplete with the PBEM, especially for us in the UK. The UK and US versions can't be that different, surely it wouldn't take too long to program it in?

For those of you who want to vent your spleen in this case please do so against Electronic Arts, not Firaxis.
EA were the ones who insisted on the different version in Europe to allow for a higher level of copy protection which means that the patch is that much harder to implement.

This makes me mad. Okay, so I can understand a company's motivation to protect their products from piracy and I'm even willing to tolerate a few intial bugs caused by the copy protection when they are fixed quickly ... but it is an insult to treat us Europeans different than US citizens. What's the matter, do we all look like criminals? Besides, I don't really understand the purpose of this - those guys who spread those pirated copies will just get the easy-to-copy US version. Geez, many of us Germans would be actually glad to get their hands on original english versions if it wouldn't be such a pain in the a** to order them. With this course of policy from EA and other companies, my tolerance for their interests slowly comes to an end.
