Unlike starcraft, which charges you different levels of support for you military units, depending upon size, SMAC only asks one mineral per turn for unit support, seemingly regardless of the quality of unit being supported. I.e, a scout patrol costs the same support as a quantum laser chopper.

While I can't come up with a complete makeover for the support straight off, it would make sense that big guns require energy to fire, heavy armour requires minerals to repair, and special abilities need power to operate.

Using minerals (diamond thingys) and Energy - as distinct from labs and pysch. Minerals must come out of home city. Energy can come from anywhere. Units that don't get feed are disabled instead of disbanded, too (i.e can't move, attack, or heal (defend as normal).

So for instance:

Scout patrol - no support. Build as many as you desire.

Recon Rover - laser gun needs one energy for support.

Synthmetal sentinels - need one mineral for
support.

Needle jets - need one energy for chassis (air power is expensive, after all) and one energy for weapons above particle impactor.
