First of all, I think it's important for us as consumers of Firaxis's product to express which parts of SMAC are most attractive to us, so that they will work harder on improving it in sequels. My vote is for the diplomacy AI.

Though I know that it's based on all sorts of algorhythms, I still like having the feeling that I'm dealing with real people. I start feeling loyal to some factions and hating others.

In that vein, here are some suggestions for what would make diplomatic relations even more fun (some of them might already exist and I wouldn't know it). Please add to this list!

1. Have the computer account for how long a relationship has gone on for (maybe you can find out, too).
2. Add to the "flavor" of diplomacy by having more dialogue variations. I always feel like I'm about to insult the faction when I call his request for tech a "lie," though it obviously doesn't have an effect when they turn around and ask for a Pact. I know this will then make customizing factions harder, because you have to make even more changes in the .txt file.
3. Be able to pressure factions to do things like change social engineering choices, renounce or make pacts (as well as treaties).
4. Be able to trade, sell, or buy units. On the other hand this might be unbalancing (a Morgan-Spartan-UOP alliance, for example).
5. Be able to encourage or discourage Pact brothers from building specific items, or maybe a general class of items (stop doing that secret project, you know I'll beat you to it anyway and you'll just lost minerals).

The most important point is that I love the diplomacy AI. The fact that I'm getting attached to Zhakarov might mean that I need to start getting more human friends...

That would be pretty cool. I can, however, see the AI abusing the ability to trade units, and would end up conquering the game with invincable units. :P

Two suggestions:

1. More control over surrendered factions.
I always found it annoying when surrendered factions would start a war with another faction and lose. Also they start giving techs to my enemies.

2. Alliances with more that involve more than two people so that three factions can team up against one instead of having to deal with two factions seperatly.

On the subject of more diplomatic options: It would also be very cool if you could lie to the other faction when they demand that you remove units from their turf ie "as you must surly be aware, I have no millitary units in your terrirory", or (in a blood truce situation) if you could tell them not to presume to tell you where to put your units. As it stands, the options are: complience or vendeta. It should be easier to provoke the AI into ruining ITS reputation

I would like to be able to threaten and carry out trade embargoes. I like being able to blame probe teams on other factions, but I would also like to be able to mind control for another faction. I would like more options when they ask to borrow money.\
Also, why do factions suddenly turn hostile?
I just fought all Deirdre's wars for her, I had a green economy and a wonderful + planet rating, I kept everyone off her back and gave her everything she wanted, and in one turn she went from magnanimous to repudiating our pact! Why, deirdre, why? Was it something I said? You should have given me some warning before you walked out!
