I have found several similarities between these two:

The monoliths (does this need any explaining?)

Some of the samples (When you build the scout patrol, you hear a sample from 2001 in the background (the breathing), when you exit the game, the "Please don't go" resembles ALOT the HAL in 2001)

Miscellianous things: When you exit (or was it restart?), the "Open the pod bay doors" text...

Has anyone else found more similarities??

R.I.P. Stanley Kubrick 1928 - 1999

You forgot the biggest one. In 2001 the astronaut (what is his name) turned into pure thought. So will you in SMAC.

Have you parsed the Alpha.txt file? The abbreviation for Self-Aware Machines is... HAL9000.

This is a bit off topic, but don't you think there are lots of similarities between Contact and 2001 too? The scene where Jody Foster falls through the wormhole looks like an exact copy of 2001.

I think you will find similarities with a lot of sci-fi movies and novels in this game...

Anyway, the astronaut's name in 2001 was David Bowman if I'm not mistaken (remember HAL speaking in a voice that was getting slower with every unplugged module... "Dave, what are you doing ?")

Great movie, in spite of the part when Dave falls into the monolith, and you see flashing colors on the screen for about 20 minutes (excellent way to go to sleep if you ask me - maybe I should try this against SMACinsomnia).
