I was disappointed by the diplomacy in SMAC. The game is great, but the diplomacy was really a disappointment. I had heard it would be some much better than in Civ2, but except for the somewhat better AI and the council, it's all the same. The could for example have added the surrender option from Master of Orion 2, where you can surrender all remaining bases, forces, everything to an enemy. Or another MOO2-option. "Stop spying or else...". And trade and research treaties instead of adding them to the peace treaty and alliance. The enemy leaders should also make more realistic demands. Threatening to destroy you when they've got one city left seems ridiculous, or demanding a lotta' credits to make truce when they are the loosing side. It just doesn't make sense. Can this be fixed in a patch? There should also be much more council options. Form new U.N. for example. Or different sanctions against different leaders, or assigning units to peacekeeping missions commanded by the current planetary governor or UN-boss. That would make the game a lot more realistic. And more propaganda should be possible. The Believers should try to spread christianity to other factions and so on, to gain support that will cause pressure on the leader when dealing with that faction. There should just generally be more diplomatic options, and I hope that this can be improved by a patch, although I doubt it will actually happen.

I agree with the diplomacy, it's just so rigid. When I played MOO2 I loved the idea of research and commerce treaties. In my opinion the council was disappointing, I had expected so much from it but instead there are only about ten possible things to do.

In a perfect diplomacy structure I'd like to have the option to suggest to your allies what research they should work towards while you work at another research thing, then you transfer the data between yourselves.

I also don't really like the way that you can be allied to a civilisation since planetfall and then when you make a slight change in your social structure they break off their pact and soon declare war.

This happened when I was the PeaceKeepers, I had been allied to the University since the start and I had researched everything. I changed my social structure to allow me to produce and control more units for my war against the Believers and the University get agitated because I'm "Stifling research".

The diplomacy could have been so much more...
