I purchased SMAC last weekend and have found it to be great fun! I never really had played straight turn based strategy before. Well, except for a small little game on the C64 called M.U.L.E. But I digress.
I find that SMAC is much more fun because there is not a small set of ways to accomplish things like you see in RTS games.

I enjoyed SMAC so much that I bought Civ2 ($20, what the hell) yesterday to try it out. Based upon about 15 minutes of playing I have to say that SMAC was more intuitive to play and easier to learn the basics. Civ2 will be a fun game to play but preliminarily I think SMAC is easier and provides some more depth. I do love the music and misc sounds in CIV2 though!
