I have played about 8-9 games of SMAC an in all of them the morganites have been the weakest or the second weakest faction. This isnīt because of the -1 support problem but because they never expand and build new bases. Yes, itīs true. They build one or two bases more than the one they begin with but thatīs all. Even if they are alone on a big continent and are not threteaned by war they doesnīt expand. Iīm currently playing a game with time warp. Everybody started out with 5-6 bases and the morganites actually hold their own but this is only because that everybody started out with quite many bases. If the morganites expand they do ok, but if they only build base facilities they usually getīs their ass kicked (This is especially stupid because they need hab-complex to exceed base size 4, and therefore doesnīt need most base facilities they build).
The computer seems to think that they canīt afford the 1/4 population loss they get when building a colony pod and only has size 4.
I think that firaxis in a future patch should make them more willing to explore and build new bases.

So, anyone else thinks that the computer has trouble playing the morganites?

In every single game I've played there's been a different pecking order in each one. No problems here...

I just played a games where the Morganites were right next to me, but they still managed to build about half a dozen cities. So I made them my friend, and we prospered for a while until he got attacked by Sparta. I sent a big army through Morgan territory to fight them off (since Morgan asked me really nicely). But then Morgan declared war on me. So I made Sparta my friend instead and we carved up his empire.

After that the Morganites played very poorly.

Although, in light of the original topic, I often saw Morganic colony pods roaming around my territory in circles, so maybe they get stuck somehow.

When I play against a computer Morgan (VERY VERY rare!) I overwrite his morgan.txt file with one that gives hims a free energy bank. He seems to do much better with that improvement (sometimes I give him +1 industry instead, again seems to do much better). It isn't to say Morgan is weak, far from it, but the computer does seem to have troubles (namely because Morgan should be more of a pacifist and instead runs around declaring war). Frankly, as Morgan myself, I could care less if somebody doesn't use free market. They are more than welcome to use planned ... it just means more money for me! Morgan should not have a hated agenda (if anything maybe make it fundamentalist), this would balance him off too.

I've played against CP Morgan and am amazed at what he does. I was in a war with Sparta while in a pact with Morgan and he just sent a swarm of probe teams into Sparta and bought up lots of units and gave them to me. Then, when I had Sparta down to 3 bases, he simultaneously bought two of the bases and Sparta surrendered.
Then he turned on me, but before that, he built several sea bases off the coast from my biggest cities, declared vendetta, and swarmed ashore with copters and ECM Silksteel units to attack my cities. I think the AI works well in this game. I am constantly amazed at what they do (both cunning and stupid).
