Someone (sorry I don't remember and I can't find the original thread) challenged me to play a game of civ2 on diety using my normal strategy.

I admit that I am quite surprised at the results. I was building a long and when I hit a certain number of cities (7-8) my three original cities went into disorder. I didn't know that civ2 was like that. The original civ is much different. First of all the number of cities is higher (like 12 or so) and second the disorder thing is handled differently. In the original civ old cities stay the same and only the new cities make trouble.

Well now I was having trouble maintaining order in my old cities (but the new ones were fine) so I went for some temples. Then I went for some Adam Smith's Trading Co. and some other wonder (don't know the name, never played civ2 much) that acted as a cathedral everywhere. Meanwhile I was fighting and doing other stuff (hey I have a bad memory) until I got bored and fired up the AC demo (I have to get to a store...)

conclusion: it doesn't work correctly (they might have gone overboard in crippling it) in civ2, also diety isn't a good level for it. I think that several factors contribute to this:

in civ1 you could go 100% tech, if you didn't you fell behind. Since you need to go high tech you don't have the money to support buildings and the like. In civ2 you can only have 60-80% tech, assuming that you go: despotism, monarchy, communism (and maybe fundamentalism later)

buildings are better: many buildings are improved, especially city walls. Making a building have no upkeep multiplies its value many times.

Hmm... I guess I just don't like civ2.
At least AC allows for a wider variety of strategies, can't wait to get the real thing.
