I don't know if this has already been discovered, but there is a set of uncommon
but not unheard of circumstances that can
allow players to harvest alien artifacts,
energy bonuses, and other pod gifts in
unlimited quantity.

Here's how it works:

0. In game preferences, choose the option
that displays the odds before each attack
and gives you the option to confirm or
cancel the attack.
1. Find a location with two pods adjacent
to one another (diagonally is okay).
This is not a common occurrence, but
I have come across one or two such places
on each map I've played.
2. Bring two ground military units to a
square that is only one move away from
either pod.
3. Save the game.
4. Reloading as necessary, investigate one
of the pods until a mind worm appears on
the other one.
4. Save again.
5. Now the fun begins. Using the second
ground unit, move to attack the mind
worm that appeared on the second pod.
When the odds dialog appears, cancel
the attack. You will get the results
of exploring the pod, but the pod
(and the mind worm on top of it) will
still be there, and your unit will still
have its full movement!!!
6. Re-initiate and re-cancel the attack as
many times as you like. Save the game
when you get results you like and reload
when you get results you don't like.
The amount of energy, artifacts, improvements, project completions, etc.
is limited only by your patience.

I first ran across this bug/feature in a
map I set up that had pods all over the place. Later, I successfully re-tested it on a system-generated map. I haven't yet tried
it out on sea pods and Isles of the Deep;
maybe someone could let me know if it works
there as well.

Enjoy,

Areiel

I think this has already been posted in the bugs section. You can get the same effect if you try to enter a pod on fungus and find a mindworm there. Then just turn down the offers of fighting the worms as you described.
