I am really enjoying SMAC and have not had any of the problems others claim to have. But I just read somewhere in the manual that there is a time limit up to 2500 (500 moves). Can that be true? Isn't that a severe limitation? If I want to drag a game on and on I should be able to do that. I have a game in progress right now where the years is 2228, I am second best according to the graph and I can't imagine it will be over in 300 moves. So what happens? Is it just "game over" here is your score? That seems to be a pretty serious bummer to me.

This, as has been pointed out before, is approximately the same as Civ 2(400 turns, IIRC). Civ 2 didn't really seem constrained. |

As far as the time limit is concerned, you will easily have every technology within that many turns. I have never gotten within 100 turns of the time limit before achieving transcendance. If I play for an Economic Victory I can generally achieve that by 2300.... you may think 300 moves doesnt seem like much, but it is really a whole lot. When I corner the energy market and have to wait 25 turns, it is NOT a short wait.-CEO Alandrion |

Actually 500 turns would set the limit at 2600. I have chosen to drag the game out for a long time, and well before 2600 I have researched every single project, eradicated every faction, cornered global energy market, been elected supreme ruler, chosen all the diplomatic options, had well over 100 bases. You won't even notice the turn limit

The first 100 turns can go pretty quickly but I'm generally taking 15-20 minutes a turn after 2300. I just finished another Hive win at Librarian in 2344 (Conquest.) The game took approximately 16 hours to win, that's enough for me. |

I'm not sure if you know this, but..The time limit is for scoring only. You can continue playing afterwards for as long as you want, just like Civ II, albeit, you won't get a score for what you do. |
