1. SMAC covers a different amount of time, depending on the difficuly level. It is about 400 years normally.2. There is a manual, a tech poster, a CD and an installation guide. Hope I haven't forgotten anything...
3. About a 9.8 personally. It takes the tried and tested CIV II model, and expands it to a new level. It is not revolutionary, but it is a very good evolution of the genre. There are a few minor complaints, but little that detracts from the game, IMHO.
4. Pretty hard to tell, as CCTP ain't out yet. Any guess would be just that, a guess. I must admit to having grave doubts about CCTP, but I am not going to make a decision until I see the game. All I can do now is guess, going on info from the 'net, and previews. Some of the stuff disturbes me (the way they model unconventional warfare, some of the techs, etc), but as I said, it is pretty hard to tell right now.
I will say that personally, I think they'll have a very tough job topping SMAC. Maybe they will, maybe they won't, but it is pretty hard to tell right now. Download the demo, and have a look. The game is much better (sound is awesome, you get to play for more than 100 years, cool movies, etc), but it gives you an idea. Note that it DOES have a steep learning curve, as the demo has no docs (though there is a pretty useful TOUR option).
