Playing the Gaians - my main base has production slowed to a crawl or not at all...what am I doing wrong...do I need to train up workers to higher levels?

Are you spending all your resources supporting existing units? Check the production bar, boxes at the left are support, boxes at the right are surplus which goes to building new items. The window in the lower right of the city screen shows you how many units you are supporting. If you're supporting too many units, you can:

1) raise your SUPPORT chracteristic (switch to Police State or Power value, or away from Democracy)

2) Disband any obsolete units.

3) Move units to another city and select "Support from here" from the Action menu (shortcut is ctrl-H, I believe).

4) If you're supporting mindworms, sit them on a Fungus square and support is free.

5) Make your city produce more resources (build mines and forests instead of farms, or wait for it to grow). There is no way to "train" better workers, but you can terraform the terrain around your city to produce more minerals.
