I've had absolutely no problems with SMAC at all on my Compaq Presario 1655 with a Pentium II. I had downloaded the patch before I bought the game and patched it immediately. As far as I know, though, the patch had nothing to do with hardware incompatibilities.

Hey I got the game, what, two weeks ago and I've been so engrossed that I haven't yet installed on my desktop. I think Firaxis is guilty of a little fibbing here. Their "laptop optimizations" were kind of laughable but to their credit they did think about it. Do not do a laptop install! Perform a full install and things will be fine... also set the ds3d and eax settings in alphacentauri.ini to 0; this seemed to help the sound stuttering on my laptop (which by the way is a Pentium MMX 233 32M RAM). Good luck.

Another point. The game was completely developed on laptops, Toshibas and IBMs.

The only problem that I have experienced running this on my Toshiba 4010 is the need to navigate with the keypad enabled. This ends up elimiateing all of the keys from U on.
One thing that would elimiate this would to be to Left-Mouse Click on a tile and have the item move there. As I see it now, I have to enable the keypad (annoying) or Right MC and select move unit here (annoying)
Now there might be a setting that I am missing, but I have not found it.
Other than that. Works great. especially getting a couple of turns in on the plane.

I'll add that my wife and I play MP between our desktop and laptop, and it works great. Although the one thing I've noticed is how much better it looks in 10x7 mode as opposed to 8x6 (although kudos to Firaxis for giving people the option).
