Has anyone won this way because they had to? I can't imagine a game getting to the point where its a race for transcendence.

The race to transcendence starts when someone makes Voice of Planet so..... unless you've wiped everybody off the face of the Planet (harder in more difficult levels) you've got a race on your hands right? Happens to me a lot actually (or am I letting this happen... )

I meant I haven't come close to the point where I would bother winning by transcendence. By that point I could always corner the global market or win a diplomatic victory.

I don't think the goal of SMAC is winning as quickly as you can.

I could have won the game through a quick conquest in 150 turns or so. But what then? Sounds boring to me.

So instead, I played more realisticaly, only going to war if I had to, and had quite a fun race to trancendance.

The idea of winning "because you have to" should not be an issue. Win because you WANT to!

For those of us interested in maxing out our points, Transcendance is the only way to go. The chief attraction of Civ/Civ II/SMAC for me is the ability to try and top my top score (the 320,000,000 population limits in Civ II annoy me intensely because of this). When playing Civ or Civ II, I would kill off all the other players except for *one* remaining enemy city, then I'd surround this one city with troops in *every* square in the city radius (if Civ I) or every land square in the city radius (if Civ II). This was an especially sweet tactic in Civ because in Civ, a city didn't automatically produce any production shields regardless of terrain. If it was on terrain that didn't produce a shield (say, un-shielded grassland), then the city square itself wouldn't produce any shields. So by surrounding the city with my own units, the city would have *no* production and only enough food to support 1 population. Eventually, all its units would die off and it would be completely unguarded. This meant that I could finish the game in peace without worrying about the sole remaining faction^Wcivilization creating a military unit and attacking me, thus screwing up my peace bonus. Then I'd build a complete starship, wait until the last possible turn to launch it so that it would arrive at SMAC at the last turn of the game, then turn up my luxuries to 80% for the last couple of turns. Meanwhile, I'm researching like mad to get Future Tech, and all my cities are in "We Love The King Day" because they've reached the point where every new citizen becomes an entertainer, so the population is going crazy.

I use the same tactic in Civ II, except that since every city produces at least one production regardless of terrain, I have to periodically send in spies to the last remaining city to destroy production of military units so that I keep my peace bonus.

In SMAC it's the same, except that you wait until the last possible moment to complete the Ascent to Transcendance. Et voila: Lots(tm) of points.

well I don't abuse anything just in order to win. But if I'm clearly going to win, I find it extremely boring to keep playing. So far nobody has said yes, maybe when I play on the huge planet it will be more likely.
