Can SMAC be played via e-mail without a third party being involved. Are you required to have a host, GM, or something to set up the game, or can it simply be done by a couple of game owners?

As far as I know it can be done by a couple of game owners...interested in a game? I think the first person starts the game and assigns the factions to the players (I'd assume by mutual consent), determines the rules and starts. They'd save the game after their turn and then e-mail to the next person on the list, this would continue until it came back to the first player. |

As a point of interest, try with all possible effort to start the game (first 20 odd turns) hotseat THEN go to PBEM. The other option is to play with the Accelerated Start option. Nothing beats getting the email turn, booting up SMAC and getting the instantaneous "Turn Complete" -- doh! |

Yes, but you can only play hotseat if you live in close proximity to each other...accelerated start is the only way to go. |
