When I play AC on my PC, whenever a human is speaking, it echoes, as if it is being played twice, one right after the other. E.g., "Man has always Man has always Killed his own Killed his own Kind Kind"Is because of my Windows NT?

This problem occurs if you have a D3D enabled sound card. In the "Alpha Centauri.ini" file, there's two values: EAX and SD3D (probably wrong on that last one). Set them both to "0" rather than "1", and that'll do it. If I got it wrong, they're both right next to each other.Failing that, post this on the "Support and Troubleshooting" forum. |

Actually, there is a troubleshooting book in the box that mentions this problem. Your soundcard doesn't currently support DirectSound. You'll need to download new drivers. Takes 10 minutes.

to quixote- my PC is NT, which means the highest version of DirectX it can go to is 3.0 -- could that be it? |

In the troubleshooting/bugreporting forum they have mentioned all sorts of NT related sound bugs. Try turning off the DX sound switchs in the alpha centauri.ini. (eax=1 and ds3d=0) |

But Neither of those lines even appear in my ini file! |

Neither of them are in your "Alphacentauri.ini" file?!?Um, I'd suggest that you reinstall then. Either that or I'd have to ask if you have a pirated version, cos those entries should be in the files from what I gather (no offence intended). Barring that, I'd suggest posting this on the "Support and Troubleshooting Forum", with details of your PC, including soundcard, processor, memory, CDROM drive, and get the Firaxians to look into it, cos I can't imagine why you don't have those two lines. Maybe it is an NT thing, I don't know... |

Personally, I think it's cool to heard "Drone Rio Drone Rio Drone Dron Unit Drone Project Riots Comple Complete"will DX 6.1 fix that? or should I set my SB Live (eax) to 0? |

I have 6.1 and the sound still echoes on my computer, not that I really mind. |

I'm not sure about DX 6.1, but I doubt it. The drivers that cause the problem are the EAX drivers from Creative, which are NOT certified, so I doubt that DX6.1 would fix that.I'd suggest just setting them to 0, as that was what I did (got an SB Live too), and it fixed it. I later installed DX 6.1, but it didn't make much difference (hey, it was already fixed ). |

I have this "sound stuttering" problem on two different PII 450s, each with a slightly different SB16 card. I've tried the ini file settings (which have to be added, they are not there by default!), the latest Creative drivers, no change. Both systems are running NT4 SP4. |

I'm guessing it has to do with Windows NT. That's what MY PC is (NTFS, actuallY). It does exactly the same echoing thing to the citizen vocies in Ceaser 3. |

Brother Greg: You must be using the patched version. The unpatched version does not have those values in the .ini file.P.S. Why accuse someone of being a pirate? GB |

Ah, that would explain it. I also noticed that they weren't there until the game had been run (like, not after just a plain install).I didn't mean to accuse him (or her), just that that was about the only thing that sprang to mind. Dopey me just forgot that the patch was for US versions only. But, we have seen a few posts from people who got the game from pirated sources, and I was just trying to rule that out. Appologies if I didn't word it very well, as I was only asking, and tried to give the impression that I wasn't accusing). |
