Beware: This posting is of no use!

I regard Civ2 as the best game ever and reach those 200%+ scores on King+ level. So I thought it would be wise to use the same strategies in SMAC. After directly winning a game on the easiest level I switched to librarian for some challenge - and I got my butt kicked!!! Argh!
Drones everywhere, can't get any feeling with the government-screen and so on... Reminds me of my first Civ2 games at higher levels, hehe.

How was your experience after "switching" from Civ2 to SMAC?

Actually, I find this one a bit easier than Civ II, but maybe that's all my Civ II experience coming to bear.

I play development games, to diplomatic or AtT endings thus far, and am at Thinker level. I also tend to do it with far fewer cities than I used to since we have those nice crawlers. The last two games I finished with 5 and 6 cities total (on a large world) respectively. With that few it was AtT endings, not diplomatic. I was a wee bit short on population. Err, a whole lot short.

So, part of the reason I find it easier is I do micromanage and I can play in a way that allows me less of that (fewer cities). With Civ II I plain tired of micromanaging 10+ (and more often 30+) cities.

If you're not a micromanage, however, the governor functions should be really nice to keep you in the "fun" part.
