I'm playing my first full game, after about a dozen on the demo. I really want to win this thing and move on to playing another faction at a higher difficulty level. I just re-elected myself as planetary governor by a count of 460-43, with two tiny factions abstaining. Why was I not named supreme leader? Is there some special thing I need to do to initiate a supreme leader vote? Yes, I have the requisite tech, Mind/Machine Interface. No, I did not disable diplomatic victory.

Alternatively, I would settle for cornering the Planet energy market. I have about 20,000 credits, but I have no idea if that is enough or not. Where is the option on the HQ menu that the doc refers to? The "," hotkey as listed on the back of the manual does not work either. Yes, I have Planetary Econ; no, I did not disable economic victory.

What am I missing?

You can't become Supreme Leader by electing yourself as Planetary Governer. They're too completly different and unrelated things.

Once you have the proper technology hold a council meeting, and unless my brain is off at this point, there should be a list of options on what you're holding the meeting for. "Repeal U.N. Charter," "Elect Governor" and one in there should be "Elect Supreme Leader."

As for econo victory, I've never tried it yet. My first guess would be that you go to your HQ and find it in one of the options. My other would be that, since you need enough money to buy every single city on the planet, you just don't have enough and the option does not become available until you're rich enough.

Could be wrong, however.

When you press "," a little message should appear at the bottom of the main map saying something like

"In order to corner the global energy market we need XXXXX number of energy credits. We only have XXXXX energy credits."

If it succeeds you should get a popup saying "We can implement your plans to corner the global energy market for XXXXX credits." and there will be a proceed button. If you click on proceed, it will tell you when your plans will come to fruition (it was 20 years for me, not sure if it is always 20 years though).

Firaxis, any chance of changing the little text message that you can't corner the market yet to a popup? Or did I maybe disable somehow? If I disabled it please tell me how to re-enable it.

Well, according to the tech tree poster and the Technology section of this web site, Mind/Machine Interface is the tech that enables diplomatic victory. I have discovered it, as can be verified by the research labs status screen as well as the Cyborg Factory in my capital and the copters and drop-enabled units in my army. But I DO NOT get Elect Supreme Leader as an option on my comm-link. What's up? I'm sure I did not disable it, as I wanted to play my first game with the standard rules, before starting to tinker.

As for the economic victory, you are probably right, I still don't have enough energy. But still I would like to see the option on the menu, and preferably have it tell me how much energy it's going to take, so I have a goal to shoot for.

Thanks for your quick response, though.

I apologize if this is too simple, but I find quite often giving detailed instructions helps find mistakes. Of course, it might just be a bug.

Diplomatic:
Click Commlink.
Click Council.
Select "Unite Behind Me as Supreme Leader" or somesuch.
Click OK
Vote yourself in.
If anyone disagrees, kill them.

Economic:
Click Menu.
Click HQ.
Click Corner the Global Energy Market.
Response as noted by CEO Bernard.

If this is exactly what you're doing, it sounds like it might be a bug and you should send in your save game to Firaxis.

Hey RobKid,

Thanks for the detailed instructions. But unfortunately, that was exactly what I was trying to do.

During my lunch hour, I went to Wendy's, fired up the laptop, and figured it out. The scoop is this: I turned on the scenario editor, checked out the custom rules screen, and ALL of the victory conditions were turned off. Even victory by conquest. There was no way I could have won that game! The only thing that was turned on was No Unity Survey, every other check box was off.

I thought I started this game with standard rules. But I know I did look at the custom rules screen befor I started. Maybe I started with custom rules, but without making any changes. But I KNOW (as in 100% sure) I did not click off any victory conditions. And I REALLY KNOW (as in 200% sure) I didn't click them all off.

Firaxis, I think either there is a bug in the startup sequence, or something got inadvertantly twiddled when I applied the patch.

Has anybody else reported similar problems?

It's pretty annoying, since after turning on cheat mode I can't get in the Hall of Fame.

Hmm, just a question, wouldn't you have noticed that the game was modified from standard rules since Blind Research was turned off?

I just played out a game to the 2600, and way outstripped the remaining factions in energy (by about 100,000) and had all of the secret projects, i think, except for one, and I just kept researching Transcendent Thought xx.

xx got up to 71 by the time I reached 2600. The rules I was playing by permitted Higher Goal: Win through Transcendence, as well as Win by conquest.

Can you tell me why the game never went into whatever happens when Transcendent Thought is successfully researched? The game was definitely past Planetary Voice.

As an aside: it seemed as though the following not-projects, (but i forget the word) kept showing up as needing to be purchased:

Bioenhancement Center
Sky Hydroponics Lab
Nessus Mining Station
Orbital Power Transmitter
Orbital Defense Pod

Thanks

After Voice if the Planet, you need to build Ascent to Transcendence. It costs 22000 energy.

By the way, you can build as many of those base facilities as you want except Biocenter, unless you haven't buld the secret project. Maybe it's a bug, I don't know.
