How come they are so much faster when they look exactly the same?

Whether they look the same or not is a personal preference. The ratio of the ingame scale to the actualy 3DS Max model is much lower. This results in lower detail at all resolutions and zoom levels. If you can't distinquish, which many can't, you're in luck. We released the Hi-Rez ones because customers asked for it.

Hear hear. I use the Low-res myself, and can hardly tell the difference on a 17" monitor, but it sure helps the flow of the game. Moving units is much smoother using low-res on my P200. I need a PII. =)

Thanks for the choice!

Is it possible to switch at a click of a button somewhere?

I'm all for speeding up gameplay (especially from mid-game on). How do I get the low-res sprites?

Thanks

They're in the \alternative art\lowres caviar folder on the CD.

Thanks, Jeffrey,

So what do I do, copy them over to the hard drive? (I'm at work, so I can't look at the directory structures right off hand.)

Yup. Click on the first one in the list, shift click the last one, and copy it to your SMAC directory.

My only complaint about the lo-res is that the probe teams look considerably less cool. Is it possible to mix and the sets match?

Thanks Snowfire.

My God, 1072 posts? That's over twice as many as Jeffrey from Firaxis. Do you actually play the game, or do you just hang out here in the forum? (I'd insert a smiley face here if I knew how.)

I will stay with the HI-RES myself because I seem to have no problems with the speed of this game. I am using a Compaq 233mmx 64megs 24xCD 2mbSV and Monster3D and it plays well for me.

This is what I did to simplify swapping the low and high res caviar. I copied the folder of low res to the hard drive. I made a new folder and titled it high res. I clicked on edit. then find. and selected *.cvr. these were the high res. I copied them to the high res folder. Then copied the low res from the folder to the game directory. This way I can swap easily without the cd.
